I just noticed over the weekend (while unfreezing my rear wheels from the axle) that there are no rear wheel well liners. What are people doing to fight against rust? I am a little disappointed i think there should have been plastic liners to protect the metal against rocks and mud. Were liners offered on past years that could be bought and installed? Thanks for the help
You can order them from Ford, or just make your own. Yes, it is a bit disappointing that a truck of the magnitude of the Superduty does not have them standard like the older models used to.
Thanks for your response. I did not know if they existed or not. I did look after reading your post and there is a fender liner listed for the 2008 F250 in the parts catalog. thanks
I noticed the same and there is a previous thread on this subject. You might "search" for it. I ordered what I thought was a rear wheel well liner but it turned out to be something different. I wanted to protect the area closer to the axle and the rear wheels. Instead I ended up with a liner that protects the area forward of the rear wheels. It does make some sense to shield that area but what about the area lateral to the rear wheels?
BTW, the shield's I ordered were from Ford and cost about $45. They are a piece of heavy plastic that you have to manipulate (bend) to fit the wheel well and attach using existing fastners. Look closely before you order. My dealer had never seen or ordered them before and was surprised they didn't protect more. Hope this helps.
It looks like there are two versions. One large single piece of plastic that covers the top of the well wheel and the second are plastic shields that go to the lower end of the wheel well (front and back). I haven't done anything about it yet but do have two cans of rubberized undercoating. Then plan to get the one that you have which is listed as "fender liner" in the body catalog and probably will also get the front shield, the truck already has the rear shield. I just don't understand this kind of bean counting. They remove a $15 piece of plastic that will eventually cost you (the owner) a $4000 truck bed. After all i only paid $54k for the truck, the $15 extra dollars would have broke the bank.
I can sympathize where you're coming from rock doctor. We also must recognize that FMC, whether Bill Ford was at the helm or someone else, has remained reasonably solvent without taking one dime of our bailout tax dollars. I'm proud of that fact as a Ford owner and because of that will only consider a Ford in the future, regardless of my having to fashion a shield for the front of the rear wheel well. These Superduty's are the most advanced, formidable and quality built trucks in the world.

:-) It is funny, i started with a Jeep, then moved onto Toyota, then onto GM and worked my way through all of the car makers including BMW and Mercedes (since everybody makes a SUV). Could not find anything better then the Ford. I agree while they tend to irritate me to no end they are the best product out there. This 08 is our third ford truck (all diesels) and all have given us good service. Now just for fun i am looking for a model A or T truck to rebuild and tinker with... What got me interested was an interview with Jay leno. He was telling the interviewer he was using his Model T (i think) for his everyday commute. He said it was an ideal car. Excellent on fuel, simple and he said something that was interesting. He said Ford used Vanadium steel which tends to resist rust so there are a lot of Model Ts out there and parts were easily available. Plus it is a single barral carb, no coil, no water pump and it loves alcohol since it was originally designed to run on alcohol as well as gas...
They stopped putting them in in 2005, I think sometime after they added either the front or the back, I ordered the set for my 05 from an 03. It should work from any year from 99-2004
Yes, Mr. Ford used Vanadium steel, it still rusts but any experienced and knowledgeable blacksmith would hoard Model T axles, springs, frames and sundry other parts for the high quality steel.
This 1926 Model T one ton has one coil for each cylinder - sound familiar. A few years ago when the Ford 500 came out with a coil for each sparkplug people thought it was such a revelation...... they were doing it back in 1908!
This truck also has 20 inch rear tires..... and the new Superduties have the 'new' 20 inch wheel options.
This truck does not move fast enough to require mud flaps or inner fender liners. The heater works good in the summer and the air conditioner really shines in the winter!
She's still chuggin along 83 years later, and you don't need a computer and four college degrees to take the air cleaner off..... they didn't have one!
That's it. I have gotten obsessed with it. There are a couple videos on youtube about the engine, trans and one that actually tells you how do drive it (which isn't complicated...down for low up for high, in the middle neutral...). It is really an amazing truck. So this is one long term project. The other is...i am also looking for a 4-53 Detroit Diesel to put into my suburban. It is a gas truck now and the short shelf life of modern gas is driving me nutz. Complete rebuild kits for these old 2-strokers are so cheap... Thanks for the picture it is now part of me desktop pictures.
That liner in the diagram appears to be for the dually. I recently put an 08 bed on my 02. The 08 bed had a liner only in the back. I used the two front liners frommy old bed, and put them on the new one mainly because it looked nice to me. The front liners are interchangeable from side to side, just flip them over.

I've been looking at replacing my 2002 F350 with a 2012 and noticed they don't have liners in front of the rear wheels. I just don't understand the logic of the engineers at Ford not requiring them. All the debris that the tires throw will eventually rust out the side panel. The cost to Ford would be pennies to include them ensuring good will towards the customer but they chose the cheap road and maybe lost a customer or two,,, bad decision.
