Truck is finally saving me money!

I am "lucky" enough to live in a TN county which requires emmissions testing. Got my letter last week to go in and have it done. I thought that my '08 F350 met the exemption requirements, but figured something had changed.

Guy took a look at the sticker on my door and aborted the test. I squeaked by the weight requirement. Any vehicle under 10,500 lbs. GVWR has to be tested. Mine was 11,000 lbs. Of course, he did say that TN legislation was discussing upping it to 14,000 lbs.

I also asked him about the new diesel trucks/cars with additional exhaust filters and such. He told me that if it has an ODBII port, then that is all they are going to look for (at the present time).

It's funny how different states do different things..........Where I live, Maryland, which I think is one of the strictest states, doesn't require emissions testing for diesels. Crazy. Glad your truck is saving you money.

ya..... they don't emission test diesel's here in California either.... I also think its weird that they would test a brand new truck??? They don't start to test gas rigs here until they are 4 years old.

What's crazy here is that not every county in TN requires emmissions testing. My county apparently does not meet federal ozone standards. Every other county within several hundred miles does. Go figure???

I know people that renew their registration in an adjoining county because they have removed their cat converter (that is one thing that they check on gassers). My buddy said that the checking station also places a sensor in the tailpipe of his '01 F250 when testing.

Actually, a law was passed this year that requires diesel vehicles manufactured after 1997 whose gross vehicle weight rating is 8501 pounds or less to be smog checked. So, it doesn't really apply to us full-sized truck drivers, but for those who buy the upcoming diesel-powered F150 will very likely be included in the smog check program.

And for gas-powered cars, you're exempt from smog checks if your vehicle is six years old or newer (based on manufacture year).
