Using the Stowable Bed Extender

I ordered my truck with the factory-installed stowable bed extender. I thought it was a great idea until the first time I went to use it. Here's the sequence of events and the problem I encountered:

I have a crew cab short box, by the way...

1. Kept the extender in the stowed position.
2. Loaded the truck with a total of five 4x8 sheets 3/4" thick.
3. Tried to fold out the extender for use and found that I couldn't unfold it because now matter how I twisted or turned it (including into the highest rotated position), it kept hitting the loaded material.
4. Finally twisted it enough by bending the plastic to move it into position and lock it.

What would be really helpful is if the whole thing could be easily removed during loading, then quickly reinstalled and unfolded after the truck is loaded. Unless I'm missing something, I don't see a good way to unfold the extender after the truck is loaded. I checked the user's manual but didn't see anything helpful. In fact, even in the stowed position, every time I slid a new sheet into the truck, I kept hitting some part of the STOWED extender. Because it's made of plastic, I think I'm eventually going to break something off.

How have you all been getting along with the new extender? Is there an easier way to use it than I can see?

-Mike

I had the same issue when loading logs. Have to plan ahead I guess. I think even if you had the tool to remove the bugger you wouldn't be able to once loaded. I'm glad I have it but it has its limitations.
