using trailer plug adapter

I have a 2008 F-350 with integrated brake controller. My buddy has a trailer with a small 6 pin round connecter. My I used an old adapter to plug into the large 7 pin on the truck. The brakes on the trailer locked up and the dash said trailer not connected. Can I not use an adapter or is there something wrong somewhere?

You should be able to use the adapter to a 6 prong plug. You will however need to check the position of the wires in that adapter. More than likely you'll have to simply switch two wires in the adapter so it is compatible with the OEM 7 prong. (assuming your 6 prong plug is wired standard) Using a test light, just identify each circuit on the seven prong and, one a time see which terminal that connects to in the adapter. Change the terminals marked in the adapter to reflect your truck's 7 prong.

There is two ways to convert 7-6 because of two different 6 pin plug pinouts IIRC. I think the center pin is different. One way it's the charge wire, the other it's the brakes. My 7-6 adapter came with instructions on how/what to change.
