Here in Virginia the county assesses the value of your personal property (ie: Vehicles, Boats, Planes, etc) so they can tax you on it. So I just received my tax bill for my 2008 Ford F250 6.4L King Ranch that I purchased back in July 2007 for around $55,000. Fully loaded, the whole 9-yards.. Today the tax bill I received listed an estimated value of my vehicle at $27,000. I nearly fell over..
Now obviously, the lower they value my truck, the less money I pay in taxes. But I honestly think the people in the tax office greatly under estimated the value of my truck. I looked on CarMax for a similar 2008 King Ranch 6.4L Diesel and the one being sold is going for nearly $40,000. And it has 13,000/miles whereas mine only has 10,000/miles.
So my question is, am I crazy? Or is an assessment of $27,000k for my 2008 F250 6.4L Diesel a tad on the low side?
I would not be in a hurry to have them change that. My guess is that they use wholesale numbers, but what do I know? The good news is your truck should hold that value for the next 4 years or so...
Do NOT call the county tax assessor to question this. They WILL charge you more. I nearly crapped a brick when I got my Virginia tax bill. I have another post on VA taxes on another thread in here (I think title is "What does it weight?"). I'd put in a link to that thread if I knew how. I would be very happy to have mine valued that low. As long as your insurance company has the correct value it doesn't matter what DMV says.

Thanks. I don't plan on questioning the Tax Man. The lower they wanna estimate my vehicle, the better.. Loudoun County wants $4.20 on every $100 of assessed value. So thats a $700+ yearly tax bill for me right now. Since the state pays 58%.
If they list your weight as over 7501 lbs they don't pay 58%. They pay 0%. I went through that battle and won by sheer luck. My tax bill is around $1100 a year, down from $1900 when they had me at over 7501 lbs. I wish they'd value me truck at half its value.

Now you guys have me worried about what my Tax bill will be. I'm lucky enough to have to pay Loudoun Taxes and Town of Leesburg Taxes! I'd be very happy if they assess my truck at $27k, but I don't think I'll be that lucky.
jsteinmiller - are you saying that your truck is under the 7501 limit? From what I thought, if you registered your truck with Truck tags then you lose that portion of the tax the State pays for.....

FFXhub:
Tell me something. Do you have any problems finding stations in our neck of the woods selling the Ultra Low Sulfur Diesel? Because I live in Ashburn and I swear every station still has the black Low Sulfur Diesel stickers on the pump. The only two places I've been getting diesel from is the Citgo in Leesburg which does have ULSD and the Liberty station which has BioDiesel 5% which Ford says is acceptable in the new '08s.
So let me know if you have found other ULSD stations.

Thanks,
Sorry but I have no problem finding fuel.......I find it on almost any corner - (V10, no PSD for me......)
Sorry couldn't resist.
Anyway, I know others who have the same problem. I can only imagine what it's like in Ashburn. Really aren't that many diesel trucks out there so I don't think there is the demand for the ULSD stations in Ashburn. LIke you said the Citgo in Leesburg, I thought the Shell at the Corner of Plaza and Rt 7 had it, but I may be wrong......

When my dealership sent the registration paperwork in they did a plate transfer from my Explorer to the F350. They checked first (with DMV, I think) to make sure they could do that. That meant I didn't get truck tags, just regular old car tags. They also reported the weight as 4500 or so. York county said that wasn't accurate and didn't accept it so charged me 100% of the taxes. I called a few other offices with no success, when lo and behold, someone changed the weight to 7500 lbs. I'm not arguing and I'm not going to weigh my truck. I have complete and total faith in my government and fully accept their decision on the weight of my truck. [Edit] What I never considered until just now is, what benefit, if any, is there to registering with truck plates vs. car plates (assuming that one has the choice)? Is registration cheaper, taxes lower, manliness manlier? At the time I didn't think to investigate.
As far as ULSD, about 100% of stations down here have switched. I occasionally wander around up in your neck of the woods and have to make sure I don't get close to E or else risk a tank of the dreaded LSD (does that make my truck hallucinate?)
