Where is and how to relocate the temperature sensor

It's about time to put the Winter grille cover back on. When it's on it throws off the outside temperature reading. I get temp readings MUCH higher than the actual reading.

First where is and what does the sensor look like and how and where to relocate ??

I believe when you open the hood, it is on right side of the truck where the block heater cord is, just under the head light and above the bumper. It's a black plastic sensor. I'll try to confirm it when I'm near my truck

Any other ideas on this ???

I get temperature readings in the 20's when I know it's single digits outside.

I think I know where the sensor is (think is the key word). Where best to relocate it ??

Ford has a service kit available to relocate the sensor for folks such as yourself who are having issues with the EATC freaking out while running the winter cover and/or a plow. The part number for the kit is 8C3Z-14A411-C which has a MSRP of $48.53.

NOTE: If you are still under the original 36K warranty, you can get the issue taken care of under warranty using TSB 08-14-4.

07/21/08
LACK OF HEAT WHEN - SNOWPLOW AND/OR
WINTER GRILL COVER - EATC EQUIPPED VEHICLES
ONLY

FORD:
2008 F-Super Duty

ISSUE
Some 2008 F-Super Duty vehicles equipped with Electronic Automatic Temperature Control (EATC), may exhibit a lack of heat while snowplowing or using a winter grill cover. Symptoms may include higher than normal outside air temperature display readings. The abnormal outside temperature readings could lead to improper automatic temperature control function with inadequate heat provided to the cabin and/or undesired mode changes.

ACTION
Follow the Service Procedure steps to correct the condition.

SERVICE PROCEDURE

Relocate the outside air temperature sensor by following the instructions provided in the Service Kit.
WARRANTY STATUS: Eligible Under Provisions Of New Vehicle Limited Warranty Coverage
IMPORTANT : Warranty coverage limits/policies are not altered by a TSB. Warranty coverage limits are determined by the identified causal part.

PowerStrokeHD: Thanks for the interesting information. Do you know how I can tell if this was done to my truck? I’m sure it, isn’t because I have my grille cover on and my EXT temperature reading is way off. I’m bringing my truck to the dealer on Monday for power loss issues and it seems to never go well when I tell the Service Adviser that so and so has this on his truck and why do I have to ask for it to be on mine.

You wouldn't have a link to see this part 8C3Z-14A411-C,

Thanks Again....MPD56

Unfortunatly I have no further info or pictures of the actual part. I happened to remember seeing the TSB before and did a little digging to provide the info above. This seems to be one of those little known about TSB's since there is still quite a bit of talk about the issue yet there is virtually no info out there that a fix is actually available.

As for how to tell if it is already done... Well if you have owned the truck since new and have not requested it be done or seen any paperwork from your dealer with the above part number you can safely assume it has not as this is one of those issues that they will only fix if you complain about it. If you did not buy the truck new the S/A can check in OASIS when you take the truck in to see if it was done at any point under warranty. Other then that I would say that you are correct in assuming that it has not been done based on the issues you are having with your EATC.

Just an update: I just got home from the Dealer after looking at my truck for power loss issues I had last Thursday. I bought up if my truck’s external temperature sensor had the sensor relocate kit installed on my truck? This affects trucks with auto cab climate control, when the grille cover is on or plowing. This was posted by PowerStrokeHD on an above post; I printed it out and produced it to the Service Adviser when it didn’t look like he was going to do anything. Boy my dealer just likes me pulling print outs, out of my pocket!! LOL. Also my intermittent power loss issue is a flaky EGR, new version EGR and relocate kit on order.

PowerStrokeHD: Thanks again for the information.
