Why are there so many '08 Powerstrokes on the market?

My '03 F-350 got totaled last week so I'm in the market for another one. I've been mostly looking at used on the internet. I'm surprised by the number of '08s with +/- 15,000 miles for sale--dozens of them. Do you suppose these '08s are coming off lease? What's happening?

A good reason is that the mileage on the new trucks is horrible

Truck sales of all types have cratered. Diesels are off on the order off 50% from last year. Too much supply equals a great deal for you.

quick guesses:

- coming off of lease
- bad economy and people need extra money for something else.
- combination of low mileage and expensive diesel, especially when used as a non-hauling daily-driver truck. There was a forum discussion last week mentioned that SD buyers are changing from ordering the 6.4L diesel to gas engines.
- people sick of new DPF/emissions rules moving back to older diesels. Possible. As a side note, I think the 2010+ diesels will have an uphill battle when buyers are faced with urea tanks(I've read 1 gallon lasts 250 miles), DPF and who knows what else, all combined with even-higher fuel costs. Hopefully mileage will go back up by then.

I just hope the sellers aren't upside down/underwater on their loans due to faster depreciation than they originally thought. The "20K off MSRP" thread elsewhere is going to trickle down sooner or later to affect resale prices.

Obligatory 6.4 content: Still on the original radiator at almost 17K miles! (Yes, I know: just a matter of time...)

Honestly it's the fact that so many people who live in urban areas who in no way need a truck with this power and size, are realizing they might be better off with a Ranger...instead of a truck with 650 ft/lbs of torque to haul their lawn fertilizer home from home depot

Price of diesel fuel is less than $1 more per gallon....If you can afford a $50K truck, you should be more than able to keep it fed, especially if compared to a V8 gasser....I just don't get it I guess....

As for me, I am going to get the biggest most powerful engine I can find, and use as much fuel as I can, until one of two things happen...The government wakes the $#%@ up and starts drilling for our own oil, or diesel fuel is either non-existent or $10 per gallon. I can afford a $50K truck but not $2K a month on fuel Let's just enjoy these trucks as long as we can huh??

$50,000 truck used to be worth $40,000 when you drive it home. today its worth $30,000If you sell it, unless you paid cash, you get nothing.

The cost per mile for fuel for a 12mpg diesel truck is 36 cents while a 20mpg car is 18 cents. If you drive 1500 miles per month which is a lot, it costs $270 more to fuel the truck. That money won't make pmts on a used Prius or a diesel rabbit.

Da, that why we have a PSD. Personally, I use my Honda (42mpg) for the 80 mile a day commutue and my PSD for Recreation on the weekends and evenings.

I talked to a wholesaler this morning. He just bought a F350 (Black/Black) fully loaded/lifted with a special package above a KR and $8K stereo for $33K. It only has 5000 miles on it and supposedly cost $60K. He said he would take $35K just to get rid of it quick. His business is hurting too! Oh the OG owner traded it in on a Lexus.
