Yes. It is nice having the larger view in the navigation display. I have that in my 2007 Tundra. With an "anytime" switch mod you can turn it on any time to check your trailer load or when changing lanes in bumper to bumper traffic.

The mirror option is directed toward those without navigation. And the only mirror monitor I would recommend is the Gentex GENK-352 -- it's OEM quality (I know of at least two automobile manufacturers who use them as factory options).

I've installed two in GM 900 series pickups and have another on the way for a 2008 King Ranch with all the options but Nav and backup monitor.

Camera wire to tap into to run to display capable head unit

Hey guys, I just came across this thread, very useful info. Has anyone explored Stunya's idea any further on running the video signal from the factory cam to a display capable head unit? I am very interested in doing this and would like to know what wires the video feed is on.

the backup camera has a timer on it though. if its on for a certain period of time it automatically shuts off. it then has to be cycled (power on/off) to reset and be turned on again. if i leave my switch on, the camera will shut off after a while, then i turn the switch off then on again and the camera comes on. regardless, if the switch has been on and the camera has timed out, even if i put it in reverse, the camera will not turn on again until i flip the switch off and on again.

There is a very simple way to make your back up camera come up usig a switcher and automatic reverse trigger. What you have to do is connect the reverse camera to ignition and split the video out from the camera with an rca adapter.

Hope this helps.

Junglekarma,
I think you misunderstood what Stunya and I were discussing. Although this thread was originally started on how to hookup the rear camera to an upfitter switch, it has evolved. I understand how to hookup a backup camera to the come on with the upfitter switch, and even how to hookup an aftermarket camera to the video input of a compatible head unit. The discussion was on how to split the video signal on a factory installed rear camera to work on both the rearview mirror and on a video capable head unit. In other words, which wires on the factory harness (that goes to the rearview mirror) carry the video signal and would thereby enable you connect to an rca jack and plug into a capable head unit. I assumed that someone would have done this by now, all you really need is the pin out of the Rearview mirror plug C911, but I can't find this info anywhere. Does anybody have this?

jliltd,
Your post shows the input voltage wiring, do you have the entire pinout on the plug???

Ok, I am gonna bump and add to this thread posing another question. Beyond making the camera work thru the upfitter switches, I would like to move the camera (or add another to the circuit) that would be mounted in the vicinity of the third brake light (the one on the cab) so that it would look down into the bed. Reason being as I will be pulling a 5th Wheel camper (full-time rv'ing) and seeing the hitch to line up with the king-pin on the camper would save me some time getting in and out of the truck... although I can pretty much line up after years of practice, I figure since I gotta have this camera with the Lariat I might as well figure out a way to use it my circumstance...

Thanks

Where is the connector

Can anyone tell me where the wire connector is located so I can tap into the green/brown wire?

Thanks,
Herb

The harness comes down the passenger side a-pillar. I was able to pull mine out far enough to do all my cutting right there standing flat footed on the ground.
I tapped the wire right there & the relay will tuck in nicely right there nest to the dash. There is a ground in that harness too.
You will need to pop off the side dash panel.
I used covered female blade terminals & hit the relay directly with them. Then ran my power wire from the relay to the #3 switch wire all the way across the cab.
If you can get a hold of some Posi-Lock connectors they make it really easy to tap the ground & upfitter power wires.
Now, if I can figure out how to get the timer out of the loop.

Are all of the SD's wired the same even if you don't have the factory installed camera and monitor? I just bought aftermarket camera and monitor. I would like to find the reverse wire under the dash instead of making the connections in the taillight housing, exposing them to the weather. Is the green/brown wire used for anything else in the truck?
Thanks

You don't need to tap the tail light housing. You can tap your trailer wiring harness. Center pin of the 7-pin connector is your reverse signal; that'll give you power to your camera when reverse is engaged. Get power for your monitor from the battery.

Use an inline splice and cover it in electrical tape after the fact.

You'll need a relay and switch if you want to activate the camera w/o actually being in reverse.
