I'm not surprised. I've never heard of kawana camera. The eBay seller listed in my posting was "Kawacam". Here is a link to to Kawacam's items:

eBay Seller: kawacam: Electronics, Home Garden items on eBay.com

I don't have anything to do with Kawacam but have used their products without issue.

Jliltd, hey bud what brand of camera are you using? I would like to find one that's a little smaller and less obtrusive than those big chrome ones that bolt onto the license plate.
Thanks.

For the tailgate (I am assuming that is what you are referring to) I used the Ford factory OEM handle bezel designed for the factory camera. Since this truck did not have the factory camera I had to buy the new bezel from a ford dealer (Tasca Ford internet sales at tascaparts.com). Then I just stuck a nickle-size backup camera from eBay into the bezel's factory hole. I had to prepare the hole with a filler washer epoxied to the bezel so the aftermarket camera would snap in properly. Could use most any aftermarket camera that was similar size to the bezel hole and make it work. The wider the specification the better (i.e. 170 degree view camera better than a 150 degree view camera).

maybe I missed after reading thread twice....but my $1,000.00 question is.....

Has anyone used the factory supplied camera with an aftermarket headunit that is video capable?

Did you splice in at the base of the passenger seat where it is fed before it takes a route to the headliner? How did you make the connection?

I'm not too worried about having the camera in the rear view to degrade the picture. I have access to a 2010 with the whole shebang (factory) and I like the view from the middle of the dash.

Thanks,
Adam

I found this picture in one of the other forums I found that was talking about backup camera installs. Can anyone confirm/deny/elaborate if could it be as easy as splicing this connector to the correct feed wire to get an RCA connector to carry on to an aftermarket head unit?

Thanks,
Adam

Anyone have any video recommendations as to using the factory camera with an aftermarket setup?

or just abandon the effort and keep factory untouched (camera/display) and run new camera(s) that have the RCA already wired to a new aftermarket head unit??

Thanks,
Adam

I was considering adding a backup camera like yours. The questions I have is where did you find that angled housing for the camera? I may just install the camera in the red portion of the roof/bed light

Over the past 5 to 6 months I have been closely watching this forum for a solution to add a second backup camera when you have the factory GPS and backup camera. As far as I know currently there is no such plug and play animal available. I found several partial solutions such as Lockpick from Coastal Tech. After reviewing comments from several sources I made the decision to find another manufacturer. I found NAV-TV in Boca Raton and telling them what I wanted they don’t have anything either. They referred me to MAD MARK’S in Bradenton Florida. I called them and they could do everything. I went to them the next day and Terry is the technician who installed the system and it works FANTASTIC, AWSOME and SIMPLE and any other word to describe the set up. They use the “black box” from NAV-TV and Terry does the rest using the upfitter switches. Now let me tell you how it’s set up.

1. When backing up the tailgate camera comes on, flip switch #4 on and the second camera comes on.
2. When going down the road and you want see behind you press the radio off/on button twice quickly and the backup camera comes on flip switch #4 and the second camera comes on. Press radio off/on button twice quickly again and the screen you left comes back.
3. The NAV-TV box is hooked up to switch #3. When it is on it allows street address input and watching the DVD just like any of the other boxes when off it reverts back to normal operation.
4. There are no menus to scroll thru and double function on the steering wheel with the phone.
5. When upfitter switches #3 and 4 are in the off position everything works in the factory configuration.

In summary it does everything I want with a simple off/on of the upfitter switches and a push of the radio on/off button. You can call Mad Mark’s Stereo at 941-748-5069.

That is exactly what I'm installing my camera for. I have to remove the tailgate anyway for my 5th wheel tailgate so I decided to mount the camera on the 3rd stop light lens above the back window. It will be installed in the center portion od the red lens. I have the camera and plan to hook it up to the rear connector near the spare tire.

Until I get me truck in a 6-8 weeks I will just have to guess how I'm going to install. If I can find a better point of connecting in the cab I will find it.
