I have a set of wheels for my truck with winter tires mounted that I would like to put on for the winter. My truck came with TPMS, and these wheels don't have it. Can I just put them on without problem, or do I have to install TPMS bands on them? I don't care if the TPMS doesn't work for the couple months they are on, I'm worried that the truck will show a warning, or what ever it does when there is a problem.

Here's my understanding of this idiotic system. Unless you transfer the bands to your new wheels you will get a constant warning. It's a message display - not a chime - but still a nuisance. Even if you replace the bands the system expects to see the tire pressures in spec from the OEM tires. I haven't gotten a clear answer as to whether the system can be dealer re-programmed from its original settings.

You can reprogram your TPMS. There is a code tool that comes with your truck. The tone will show up when you start your truck. Mine was on because during delivery they didn't set the system up. So for the first 1k miles mine was on. If it's installed it's on now. You could take the sensors out and put them into a PVC pipe sealed to 80psi. Some folks have done that. You could also buy sensors off ebay and do the same thing.

Not sure what you're saying - especially about the PVC. I have the 're-learning' transmitter that came with my truck. I actually don't have the sensors - unbeknownst to me the dealer robbed them off my rig before I bought it. I get a warning message every time I start up and the warning Icon but have never had a tone. Dealer has sensors in stock to put back on my rig but I haven't had time to go in.

Thanks for the replies. My truck is supposed to have TPMS, but I didn't get anything to reprogram it with. The tire pressure warning light comes on when I start the truck, and goes off immediately. I guess I better talk to my dealer.

Pretty stupid system IMHO,, I mean if you can't keep your tire pressure checked, How did we get buy all these years before?

I just had my sensors installed last Friday (dealer had robbed them off my wheels pre-purchase) I asked them to set the system at 60 psi - which they thought they could do. Nope - unless they put 80 psi in the rear tires the warning kept activating.
I'd sure like to discuss this idiotic system with someone at Ford!

The PVC deal is about the easiest way. Get the wheel sensors and seal them in a small piece of PVC pipe with a valve stem in it. Pressurize to 80 psi and strap to bottom of truck somewhere. Now you can run whatever tire pressure you want on wheels without sensors.

You all realize TPMS is thanks to the FEDS. ALL vehicles 2007 and up have TPMS. They have to. Its now the law. It came about due to the Firestone/Ford Explorer issue. idiot owners couldnt/wouldnt keep the tire pressures correct, and underinflated tires blew out. So, Congress blames the auto makers instead of idiot owners and we get TPMS.
Now, TPMS looks for a signal from the tire sensors. The system does have a self learn procedure so if one rotates tires changes them etc, the system will eventually "learn" and turn the light out. The systems are preset to a pressure and are non adjustable. So if the door label says 40 and you want to run 35, too bad. The systems are sensitive allowing only a 5% variation in tire pressure before the light goes on. So when weather turns cold quickly, TPMS light.
The best way to "disable" the system, is to disconnect the bulb in the instrument cluster. The dealer cannot disable or change the system, its against the law, and there's no way to do it.
