We have five 2008 PSD on order. Orders placed in Nov - Dec. All 4x4, autos, SRW, XL, Fleet trucks. Two Crews and three Extended. We just got word that the standard gear ratio has been changed from 3.73 to 3.55 (Job 3 changes that has been posted here). While the December Order Guide listed 3.73 as an option, we are now being told there will be no optional gears with 17/18" wheels (XL trucks).
We tow these trucks hard. We currently have a dozen or more mix of 2004 - 2007 PSD. The 3.73 with the auto and 6.0 power gets the job done. But the 6.0 needs RPMS to make power. In our experience, a 3.55 in a 2005 - 2007 6.0 would shift excesively out of OD as RPMS would be 2K or less at legal speeds.
Are 3.73s an option for 2008 PSD SRW, non-20" auto?
If not, for those of you who pull hard and moved from a 3.73 6.0 to a 3.73 6.4, does it pull at 1900 - 2000 same as the older 6.0 or better.
I have read the HP ratings, and the fact that the 6.4 does pull better then the older 6.0, I am just a little worried with these 3.55 gears with a engine that has peak torqure rated at 2000 rpms.
I see no reason for ford to have standardised the 3.55 ratio over the 3.73 except for damage control over the high fuel consumption rep. of the 6.4. Sad thing is the 3.55 will increase MPG very little if any over the 3.73, where the 3.73 might have an advantage when towing. It is the Federally mandated emissions that lowered the MPG on ALL diesel pickups not Ford's doing.
I am in the process of ordering an '08 F350 XLT 4x4 w/18's. my dealer says no problem getting 3.73's. Not sure if the XL truck causes a problem, but it wouldn't suprise me. I tried to order my truck with rubber floors and the audiophile stereo- it can't be done! The stereo requires carpet to function properly, I guess. You can't get power folding/telescoping mirrors without the advanced security group (keyless entry, computer chip in the keys, etc). The way they structure the options on these trucks is not only confusing, but damned annoying as well.

Going to 3.55's for improved fuel economy doesn't make sense to me. Sure the 3.55's will help the guy that drives his truck on flat highways, unloaded and never pulls anything. IMO the 3.55's will make the already bad towing mileage even worse and it will take a lot more skinny pedal to get your load moving. I have an F250 Lariat CC SB A/T SRW 4x4 3.73's with 35" tires and tow a very light 8000# car hauler and I get 7 mpg towing at <65mph. Due to the fact that I have larger tires my effective gear ratio is 3.41:1 which kills my towing economy and power. A 3.55 gear ratio just doesn't make sense to me. I am probably going to have 4.10's or 4.30's installed.
My 6.0 has 35's and 3.73 gears, and with a full load of wood and a bobcat on a backhoe trailer, my truck has plenty of power. I'm hoping to get more out of the 6.4 I just ordered.

I noticed on mine that the cabling to the amp/sub behind the rear seat runs beside the center console, under the carpet. That would make sense as to why you can't have the audiophile without carpet, they need a place to hide those cables.

I just left my dealer tonight after having to take my 2007 6.0L in because of lack of power, etc... (see other post). Anyway, while I was there, we were talking about the order I will place in a few weeks for a new 2008 F-250 Crewcab. He said he just received notice form Ford that 3.73 rear ends are no longer available on any orders. He sent Ford an email asking exactly what that meant... On all trucks? On just regular cabs? Or what? He said he hasn't received a response yet.

Too bad Ford didn't have an 8-speed AT like Toyota has in the Lexus LS 460 with a 4.60 1st gear and .68 in 8th OD compared to the 5-speed Torqshifts 3.09 1st and .71 5th OD. Even the 6-speed in the 5.7L Tundra with 3.33 1st and .59 6th OD beats it at both ends.
I sure hope one can still get 3.73's as i am planning on ordering a 350 soon, and don't want 3.55's as i will probably put a bit bigger tire on. 3.55's seem like they would be hunting for gears all the time around here, with all the hills and mountain passes.

Are 3.73s an option for 2008 PSD SRW, non-20" auto?
Yes. Optional, but not standard.
I suspect your dealerperson had sand in his eye when he thought he read that 3.73 would not be available for Job3 SRW PSDs.
For both F-250 and F-350 SRW, 3.55 is standard. 3.73 limited slip is standard on all PSDs with 20" tires, and optional on all others. Yes, it's still optional, but you have to order it or you won't get it.
F-350 DRW is different. Before, 3.73 open axle was standard, and 4.10 limited slip was optional, and 4.30 came with the TowBoss pkg. Those remain, but with Job 3 you can also order 3.73 limited slip. Good for Ford. Lots of folks ordered 4.10 axle only to get the limited slip. Now that LS is available with a 3.73 ratio, there'll probably be a big demand for that option and less demand for the 4.10LS.
