I'm thinking about unloading my 2003 6.0L and getting into a new 2008. I went through the ordering process 5 years ago but have forgotten a few things so I have some questions.
How do I find out dealer invoice price?
What is the current timeline on ordering and receiving a new 2008?
When will the 2009's be available to order?
What are most people paying above dealer invoice?
How many of you use the X-plan? Is it a big deal to the salesman when you produce a PIN when dealing on a truck?
Regarding incentives: Do incentives change that much from month to month? What I'm really getting at is should I expect incentives to decrease in the coming couple of months?
Regarding trade-in: How much difference in price should I expect from a dealer compared to what my truck is worth in trade-in value according to KBB, NADA, or Edmunds? I've never traded in a vehicle, I always kept them or sold them outright. I know I can get more by selling outright but if the time comes and my new truck arrives and I haven't sold the old one, I might just trade it in if the dealership offers me a fair value.
Sorry for the questions but when your talking about possibly a $45,000-$50,000 deal, I want to get it right.
Thanks TDS.

I'll address only what I can directly answer, which is about half of what you asked for and the data is about 3 weeks old:
Delivery time: 8-10 weeks.
Incentives: 0% financing OR $3500 rebates till end of Feb.....the dealer expected it to be extended or re-entered soon. If there is a rebate at the time of order and expires before delivery, you lose as it doesn't carry over. I understand the one that ends this month had a two month run, but I could be wrong.
Trade In: I received roughly 2/3 of the computed street value of my truck using NADA. The amount was within about $300 of what 1 IL and two local dealers was quoting. But, I did not authorize a $3K dollar repair (injectors were toast from a hydrolock). I was in a pickle and the truck I did purchase was below the "build price" online before the rebates and delivered from out of state. I am sure the price could have been lower if the truck didn't need repairs to move, but like I said, I was in a bind. Additionally, I came to the table with my own financing.
Like they all say, sell yourself; that was my original plan...order and sell during the wait, but had to change mid-stream.
that's all I got...
good luck
I would like to add, get the tailgate step, didn't want it, got it and forever spoiled! wish I had the rear camera too!

Don't even speak to any salesmen. Go straight to a manager - new-car manager, truck manager, fleet manager. Preferably the fleet manager.
The first words out of your mouth after "Hi" should be: "Will you order me a new superduty pickup under the X-Plan?" If the answer is yes, then you're through negotiaiting price for the new wheels. But you still have to negotaite price for your trade-in, if any.

Any dealer will give you wholesale (auction value) for your old wheels. And not more than auction value. So the easiest way to determine that value is to shop your old vehicle to at least two used-truck dealers in your area. Drive onto a lot that has at least a few trucks similar in value to yours. Ask the manager to give you a cash bid on the truck. Compare those two cash bids to the amount your dealer offers. Sell it to the highest bidder. Or sell it to a retail buyer for a higher price if you have the time and inclination.
The blue books are a guide only. They'll give you an idea of how much to expect, but the current market and your exact truck may not match the books. Check all three = Edmunds, KBB, and NADAguides, and use the lowest wholesale price of the three books for your estimate.

My 2 cents (I sold Fords in New Orleans for about 6 years, sales, new sales manager, used sales manager and Finance manager).
Got to your local dealer tell him you want to order a truck and you are willing to pay invoice price(or even tell him you will pay $500 less, the worst they can say is "No"). This should not be a problem. It will be lower than X-plan. At invoice price the dealer is still making holdback,FDAF money and other dealer spiffs. Also, if you finance thru thru te dealer he will make money there even if you take the special rate. Dealers get paid a flat fee for doing the financing at a special rate usually around a few hundred dollars. If you order the truck and take delivery within thirty days of ship date, it will not be on the dealer floor plan so, he will have no actual costs involved in the vehicle other than the vehicle itself.
If your dealer will not show you the invoice price, he is hiding something. Everytime they "build" a truck to spec out, it gives the Retail price (MSRP) and invoice price. There is a way of printing the spec sheet to show only the Retail price, or they can show the retail and invoice price with no problem. These prices, however, are subject to change before delivery and the dealer hs no control if Ford raises or lowers the retail and/or invoice price before delivery.
my 2 cents.
Hit 'em low, the worst they can say is "No".
