What were the towing ratings on these trucks and would the 2010 be a good upgrade even though its a gasser?
I had a '99 4x4 CC V10 and pulled a 14K lb 5er. It would down shift quickly on any overpass. I would kick it out of Cruise when hitting any grade. When going up the Cajon Pass on the I-15 I would put it in 2nd and let it wind up. I managed 55 mph up the pass.
It wasn't perfect, but it did the job. The new V10's are far superior than the '99 version.

The newer V-10's from 2005-2010 with the Troqueshift are way better than the older V-10's with the E4OD trannys and even better than the stock 7.3's IMHO. Why do you think there are 90% V-10's in Class C motor homes and even a good percentage in Calss A motor homes for gassers? Dependability and workhorse engines, that's why. You just don't see many V-10's in the shop for engine problems on these heavy motor homes.

I don't believe that the F-53 chassis was ever available with a diesel so your Class A conclusion is specious. As to the vans they have always been airflow/cooling capacity limited so the choice between a 235/440 diesel engine and a 305/420 6.8 gas is pretty easy, especially in a van chassis.
That being said we have a 06 V-10 powered F-450 that I might consider as being a close match to some of the earlier 7.3 powered F-450's we have had for lighter loads and on flat ground. Put a heavier load on it and head through a mountain pass and I will pass thanks.
With diesel being ~15% cheaper than gas here the V-10 powered truck does a good job of holding the cement down in the shop though.
That is until you get a dose of bad fuel or it jells up on you just as you were going over that pass you mentioned, then the V-10 would chug on by. It's no wonder that 90% of the F-450 chassis models made into C class mortor homes were/are Ford 6.8 V-10's. They are tough, reliable and don't puke on the side of the road. But hey, I know you diesel dogs love that diesel smoke and it is so macho to work on them and smell like diesel all the time. No problem here.
