My friends 95 Chevy 3500HD rollback broke down with a Pontiac Bonneville on it, so I towed him 32 miles back to the city. It weighed about 13,000 and my truck weighs 12,900, so I was just under or right at the 26,000 GCWR. It towed great, stopped great, and pulled good. I-90 has a pretty good incline eastbound west of Elgin, and I had the cruise set at 56 MPH (because of the rain) and it maintained speed all the way up no problem. The computer was showing about 7.5 MPG, which usually is pretty accurate on my truck.
So you towd your buddy's truck PLUS the Pontiac? With a V-10?? Is your V-10 an auto or stick? You're the man, regardless, congrats!!

My truck is an automatic, with 4.88 gears. I was very comfortable towing that combo. This truck is rated for a 26,000 combination, and it did it with ease.
I have a 08 450 extra cab with a 12' mulch body and 4:88 rear. The more I drive this truck the more I love it. Sitting at an idle seems to burn some fuel but on the road its getting just over 8 mpg running back roads with lots of stop and go driving. Only have 3k on it so far so mpg should get better. I have an 02 same body same rear but it has a 7.3. In the same driving conditions with the same load the diesel get .5 mpg better and thats before the v 10 brakes in. My dealer pushed me to the V 10 as this unit will only see 9-12k per yr, at first I wasnt sure about it. The whole time it was on order I was checking out the new diesels they were getting in. After driving it for a while I'm glade I got the V10. I talk to the guys in the shop there all the time and everytime I walk in they have a few diesels on the rack, doing head gaskets and radiators. I asked my tech what they get for head gaskets on a 6.0 ,his answer was a little over 5k. That would really hurt out of warranty. My 550 had the legendary fuel tank delamination problem, 2500.00 for a new tank and fuel pump on a truck that only had 65k on it. Thinking about buying another new truck an trading an 02 7.3 crew cab w/ 142k on it. Been a good truck but I like stuff under warranty. The replacement would be a 350 4x4 crew cab short bed V 10 with 4:10 rear. I'm not a diesel basher,as I have several , but I have been more than impressed with the V10 and think more people should try it out.
POS? LOL. No current GM can do what this truck does. I doubt any diesel is more reliable than a V10. I have a 19,000 GVW that can fit in 6'11" garages (a must around here) What truck does GM have that can do both? NONE. I had 800 pound feet of torque in my last diesel, ( a Ford) and it got 13 on the highway @ 16,000 pounds. Would I trade my V10 for that again? NO.
By the way, nice wiring job you have in your truck 08dax!

i have a 99 f-450 v-10 5 speed manual with 12' flatbed biggest load i ever carried was 8 tons of stone on my bed and pulling a 24' dual axle fb trailer loaded with 8 more tons it ran like a dream i pulled it from denver co to vail co on I-70 doing 65 the whole way, up and over the continental divide and vail pass as well up a 12% grade leaving denver. i got the same mileage regardless if i was weighted down or not it was right around 8.5-9 mpg
I think my MPG would've been a bit better at 65, I went slow because the truck was new then, and pulling 13,000 pounds without additional brakes in heavy rain. Since then, I've pulled heavier trucks, like these:

What is this legendary delamination problem on the F550 ???????????????
It's not just the 550's. Not sure if the pickups have plastic or steel tanks, but the 450-550 C/C trucks have steel. I believe it's the biodiesel mix that causes this problem. Almost all diesel now has 10-20% bio in it. I stay away from diesels now, less problems with the V10's!
