Im in the market for a new superduty. Why should I buy the V10 over the 6.4.Diesel power compared the two and the 6.4 won them over.(im sure there biased of course, hense the name)Will the V10 get the same mileage around town or similar to the diesel?
Which one will stay out of the shop more? What are the downsides of the V10? Besides cost, why should I choose the gasser?
That's easy. Just look at how many V-10's were put into Class A and Class C motor homes as compared to all of the diesels, including the the 7.3, 6.0 (leaker) and even the latest (almost extinct) 6.4. Not even close. Reason why.....reliability. Ask any Ford service manager what the ratio between problems with any diesel vs the V-10 and it will shock you. The V-10 is just about bullit proof compaired to the diesels, no matter the maker. If mileage is an issue, then don't get a Super Duty. This is a work truck. If you want mileage, then get a Toyota, they get 20 mpg. If you want a stout truck that can tow almost anything, then get a F Series V-10. Maintenance is cheaper, fuel is cheaper, initial cost is cheaper, and the power isn't much difference up to 80 mph. If there is ever an engine problem, with the V-10 you just lift the hood. With a 6.4 diesel, the dealer has to lift the entire cab. You wanna do that in your back yard in a few years?
I was a diesel fan until I got this 2008 V-10 and I would never go back to a diesel now, no way, no how.

I like my 6.4l Diesel with 34K+ with no problems and pulls great been on a lot of long trip with my 19000 pounds toy hauler. I went with the diesel do to the total diesel to V10 on the road pulling trailers and other thing. I think diesel price will be a lot less than gas with in 2 year (per gal.) If you look how many years the V10 been out and the total number to the total number of diesel out there a lot more Diesel on the road than the V10. But V10 are great truck. It will be hard to pick. but Both motor on the way out in 2011. I know Maintenance and fuel is not cheaper if you look at total year Maintenance from gas to diesel. It is about the same may be $60 more per year. I have both 5.4l gas not the v10 and the 6.4L diesel. V10 or the 5.4L MPG is a lot less than the diesel MPG. Both will do great It up to your own personal wants. Both will pull fine. And best thing they are a ford (Not Chevy or that other truck.) Like what Pappy19 said if your looking for MPG only buy the Toyota it a great truck (I own one before this truck) for it load it can pull. So good luck it is a good time to buy a truck. EPA kill all MPG.
I was split between the two for months. Here the known facts:
V10: cheaper, more reliable, quieter
6.4: much more torque for towing, better fuel economy
All it comes down to is how much you drive. If it is less than 15k mi a year the V10 is surely the better option. Above about 30-40k miles the 6.4. In between it is a tough decision. Or see it that way: You cannot go wrong.
After 13 steady years of diesels, I will only buy V10's now. I've learned my lesson, with all the 6.0 and 6.4 catastrophes. My last truck I traded in with 91K miles, has not even been sold yet, and blew the head gaskets again. The first time was done with ARP's by a Ford dealer. The truck got back from it's second head gasket job last week, they drove the truck to the front to get pics, and it was smoking like a train, and now won't start. this was 30 miles after the second set. I felt bad, so I towed it back to the Ford dealer with my 09 V10. We'll see what is wrong this time in a few days. You have to pull the cab for almost any 6.4 repair, which is fine under warranty, but not something I want to do on my dime.
thanks for all the replys.I will probley end up getting the V10 as I dont want to pull the cab years on down the road.I read back a couple of pages and it seems almost everyone is happy with their V10s. I really dont need a super duty since I will only be pulling a 6700lb boat(do I?).Friends say I can get away with using a f150,but I like the fact that even pulling that weight Ill have too much truck then not enough.
Do you plan on keeping the truck past the end of the warranty?
If not, get the diesel, as long as your OK with giving up your truck for warranty work from time to time.
If you want to keep it for a long time past the end of the warranty, get the V10.
You can easily just replace the entire V10 for the cost of a minimal amount of work on a diesel.
If you figure out that the V10 can rev up higher and stay in a lower gear longer, you find that the torque-to-the-ground of the V10 versus any diesel is comparable. Not the same, but close. Which means that in real-world pulling, the V10 will do the job almost as well.
Mileage will suffer, but I've heard the 6.4L's mpgs aren't all that great compared to the V10.
If you get the V10, and plan on towing, get the lowest gear ratio you can get which is the 4.30's and do NOT go to bigger diameter tires. The V10 generally doesn't suffer from worse mileage because of gearing. You might lose 1 MPG on the highway when empty but if you plan on towing, the lower gears will HELP fuel mileage.
V10 hands down... as many say its bullit proof ......
I have 2 and will get more... Best motor, truck combo I have ever had ....
LS said it all.....and I agree 100%

What are you using it for? If you're pulling heavy, 10k+ get a diesel, if not, get a V10.

...what he said.
I had a '99 with a V-10 (2-valve) and it was a great motor. I traded it at 186K miles on my '09 with a V-10 (3-valve) The new V-10 is twice the motor the old one was, it's really that good.
I carry stuff every day but don't pull heavy loads. I also start and stop 20-30 times a day so that ruled the diesel out. That being said, I was not kind to my '99 the past few years with the start and stopping but it held up through it all and never complained. The '09 seems no different.
If you are really yanking a lot of weight, get a diesel; a V-10 should pull your boat with no trouble.
