I have been looking to replace my 2005 CTD w/ a new diesel truck. My driving conditions have change since I bought my Dodge 3.5 years ago. So, a lot more short trip driving and unloaded. I feel lately before I pull the trigger on a new diesel truck. I might be better suited w/ a gasser w/ my driving conditions and use.
So how durable are the V10 engines and what kind of mileage w/ load and unloaded w/ these? W/ the 3/4 ton gasser trucks out there. I feel w/ looks, equipment and such are better than the others, just don't know too much about the V10 in a F-250.
Everything I have heard about the V10 is that it is a reliable engine. Mileage sorta sucks I guess, but it is a big truck with a big engine. I've been seeing around 10.7 in overall driving. This is mostly in town, stop and go. I haven't done too much highway driving with it since I brought it home new. On that trip, I saw as high as 14.2. I'm driving to southcentral KY in a couple of weeks to visit family over the holiday so I'll get to see some highway MPGs.

I love my f-250 V-10 with the 6-speed manual and 4:10 ratio. It does get a little thirsty from time to time, but fill ups are less with the unleaded than with my PSD by .60 to .85 per gallon. Maintance is cheap and easy.
Just have no misconseptions, this V-10 is a truck motor, not a hot rod by any means, The HP and TQ deliver as such. Don't get me wrong, they will get up and go, but it is more of a steady delivery of HP/TQ, not the instant HP/TQ delivery of a Turbo as it builds boost.

If you look at some of the other posts I have made on the V-10, I think you will enjoy owning one, even if you tow heavy, the V-10 is no slouch. Mileage is very close to the 6.4 without all of the sootbag hassles, and difference in maintenance issues, plus the fuel cost and the initial $6500 difference in price. Try a V-10 and you'll not go back to a diesel.

They are kind of a rare bird to just find on the lot....But well worth the hunt. I flew from DFW to Davenport, IA to buy mine. Made for a nice road trip, except the ice, snow and very cold weather.....all the stuff Texans don't care for too much.

I had an 04' (bought in 2003) Cummins 2500 and now have the V-10 in my 08' F350. I loved my Cummins and it served me well but like you my driving style changed and I sold it as a package with my fifth wheel camper. I then purchased an F150. I won't go into F150 ownership except to say I now have the F350.
When I purchased the 350 I debated the same stuff as you regarding short trips, new emission crap, and the price of fuel. I felt a V-10 would better suit me and I ordered it without ever driving one. I feel it has enough power to fill in for a diesel in all but the most extreme cases. It's quiet, clean smelling, and requires less upkeep. However, I do miss the Cummins every now and again and wish I never sold the truck for an F150.
Hind sight is 20/20 and the best option for me in April 2007 was to order the V-10 F350 to replace the F150. If I owned a crystal ball that said I would dump the 06' F150 as quick as I did I would still be driving the Dodge.
Both are great trucks but unless you hate your Dodge I vote for keep it.
Sorry, but there's nothing about a Dodge that hits me. The only way they can top my 2008 V-10 is maybe mid-top end towing and then only if they have a stick shift. the Dodge automatic is crap. The Dodge stick has it's problems too, plus while they are shifting and waiting for the turbo to kick in, my V-10 is long gone. I just think you are just a Dodge dude with sour grapes. If you really do have the rig you say you have, then it looks like a humdinger to me.

Wow Pappy thats a pretty ignorant post on your behalf. First off, I do own the truck I say I do. Secondly, since I have owned both truck I probably have more of a factual opinion than your obvious brand loyal rant's about Dodges inferior truck.
FWIW the 48re Dodge transmission behind my Cummins shifted more crisply and with a more positive feel than my current Torqshift. Do I think the Dodge tranny is better.... I'm not sure. I like the tow/haul feature of the T/S but my Dodge 48re logged almost 35,000 trouble free miles while towing my fiver before I sold it.
Is the Ford interior nicer? I think so. However, the exterior fit and finish on my 04' Dodge was superior to my '08 Ford.
The OP was asking about the V-10 which I answered as honestly as possible since I debated some of the same issues he is. My point may have veered off course a bit but if you reread my original post I was not regretting selling my Dodge for the F350 but rather for an F150. I would not have sold my Dodge for a F350 because my old Dodge would do everything my current truck can. As originally posted I replaced a F150 that was not performing at the level I needed with the F350. Do I regret my F350...no.
To the OP... I see about 9-9.5 mpg city driving and this makes up 90% of my driving. I can't give you an honest highway mpg since I have never really traveled far enough on the highway with this truck to calculate it. The 5.9 Cummins I had returned about 15-16mpg city under similar driving conditions.
In closing, I'm not a brand loyal kind of truck owner. I take my truck's at face value and will be honest when it comes to strengths and weaknesses of my rigs. I also try not formulate opinions about things I have not owned.
Ed, that was a great post, and it does not sound like you are knocking any truck. Good comparison of both the rides. I don't think anyone will knock the V10. It is a solid engine with a solid truck. If I was buying new today, I would really look into a V10. Just for the savings up front. As a note, my truck has been great in everyway also. My Uncle still has the 2000 V10 CC F350 he bought in 2000. IT has close to 200K on it and still runs and drives really well. Pulls trailers as fast as he needs to and uses very little oil between changes. Scotty
