I found so far......

from Mark Kovalsky

{{{{{Several things happen.

The injectors are off. That eliminates the engine making torque, but doesn't really add any braking.

The transmission will downshift if it detects you have you foot off of the go pedal AND the truck is in tow/haul AND the truck is picking up speed. It will downshift sooner if the brake lights come on. It will downshift even sooner if the brakes are on hard enough to activate the brake pressure switch on the master cylinder.

The variable vanes on the turbo close to their maximum restriction so that the engine has to work harder to pump the exhaust out of the engine. There is exhaust even if the injectors are turned off.

It's worked this way since the introduction of the TorqShift trans and the variable vane turbo in 2003 with the 6.0L. The two turbo 6.4L works the same way, one of the turbos is a variable vane.}}}}

IT sound like it works like an exhaust brake in the way to me.

So it one more item to keep you on the road that the V10 does not have in it. During large pulls loads you may just need that help at the bottom of the hill.

See bold faced type in your quote above. The engine is downshifting, which creates engine braking. The PSD injectors shutting down and the turbo vanes closing off do not, as far as I know, really add to the slowing of the vehicle beyond what is accomplished with the downshifting/engine braking. The injectors shutting down and the turbo vanes closing off just help make sure the engine doesn't add power to the wheels(and therefore speed).

I might not have explained this correctly and I might actually be completely wrong. I will grant you that the PSD is THE ENGINE to have if you are towing heavy regularly. But as far as I know, there is nothing about a PSD-equipped superduty that will slow you down or help maintain down hill speed any more than a gasser-equipped superduty.

I'm tickled to death with my V10...that's all I have to say about it.

I read a little more it sounds like both 6.4l and v10 are both great motors for pulling loads.
thanks

I'm sure they are both great engines. In fact, I can say from personal experience that the 7.3 PSD was a great engine, my 6.0 PSD engine never gave me any grief and, so far, my V10 seems to be a fine engine.

My towing needs have decreased somewhat over the past couple of years. We used to go to horse shows every weekend. But now the LQ trailer sits in the driveway (currently with a for sale sign on it) all the time. Even if it doesn't sell, I doubt if I use it more than once or twice this summer. I'll be using a stock trailer for most of my horse hauling needs.

If we were still burning up the roads every weekend, I would probably have gone with the 6.4 PSD on this truck. But the V10 makes more sense for my current needs. I am impressed with it so far.
