I made the switch 2

I bought a diesel Jan 2009. Long bed straight drive XL 4x4. Great mileage average, 15.7mpg for 8000 miles.

Wanted an auto and short bed. After reading Pappy's post about torque mutplication on gas vs diesel, decided to go with V10.

I bought a Red short bed V10 XLT 4x4 yesterday and I am impressed with the power and really like the TS transmission.

I will post pictures as soon as the weather breaks.

The question that I have is that I didn't see anything about breakin in the owners manual. Should I break it in by varying rpm's ect. for the first 500 miles?

Forget the post, just found the info on page 5...

I pretty much varied the speed for the first 1,000 miles and did not tow anything. I then changed the oil at the dealer and used Ford Motorcraft oil for the first 3 oil changes after that. Started towing at about 2500 miles and did the K&N dropin air filter and Diablosport Predator programmer at 5,000; Airaid intake at 10,000 miles and been running that setup ever since. Now at 53,000 miles and it's running like a rabbit. I generally run Mobil 1 as I can get it at Costco pretty cheap or do the Motorcraft when I get a decent coupon from Ford. I change oil now every 3,000-4,000 miles. I know I could probably go up to 7500 between changes, but I have decided to only go up to 4,000 miles, just my deal. You're going to love that new V-10 and especially that you will never have a "regen" cycle, a $150 oil change or a $150 fuel filter (s) to worry about. Plus, you won't have to pull the cab to change out the spark plugs!! What a lucky dude!!

What Pappy said!!! 08power2spare
Welcome to the ranks of new V-10 Owners!
Couldn't be happier to have found a 2010 here in Colorado myself!
Especially with the V-10 not being offered (or very limited offering) in the 2011 models...

FINALLY get to pick mine up tomorrow, my settlement with Ford went well
on my 2008 6.4, so that nightmare is almost over. Happy New Year indeed!

Best of luck with yer' new rig and yes, post some pics!
Cheers from the Colorado Rockies
Leo

Thank you all for the reply and info. I am really excited about this TS transmission. I've been playing with the switch and Pappy, you were right on the money, It's a great combination with the V10. I just won't mash it hard until It has 1k miles.

First tank was 12.3 calculated and now I know that the V10 likes it's gas like a Sailor likes his rum. HaHa! I'm not worried because I can drive over 30000 miles for the difference in the price of a new diesel being 7000 more than the V10.

I took 2 pic's today with the cell phone, not many because it's real cold here. Will see if I can attach them.

Sweet looking ride! Nice color choice too!
Speaking of color, time for a little paint on the Basketball Hoop Backboard!
Oh and nice pic of your thumb too 08power2spare.... sorry couldn't resist......
Finally picked up my rig as well today, totally stoked!
We'll have to report how these trucks perform, after broken in!

And yes, the T/S tranny is awesome, especially in tow haul mode going down steep inclines. Just a touch of the brake pedal and she stays at a reasonable braking speed w/o speeding up! Pretty cool indeed!

Enjoy your weekend and best of luck with your new ride as well!
Cheers from the Colorado Rockies

You can "mash it hard" with no worries. Biggest thing is to try and vary the speed whenever possible. That's not good for mileage but flexes the parts. I also do the first oil change at 1,000 miles just incase there's some junk from initial manufacturing process. Some change it at 500 miles, up to you. After 1,000 miles, it's do what you want to do. About the only small complaint I have had on my truck is the rear dif cover started to rust after 18 months, so I replaced it with a Maghytec finned cover. The diesel's come with an aluminum finned cover that is cheaper but the Maghytec has a higher capacity. I also added a Summit Racing external tranny filter for $40 after changing the tranny fluid at 35,000 miles. Keep us posted on your new ride; mighty nice looking rig. I have the supercab and short bed and really like it.

Good luck with your new ride. Curious..does the tranny have a dipstick to check the fluid?

zanegrey, thanks for the color compliment but I was lucky to find it on the lot. And, yes the finger got in the 'cell cam' by accident...HaHa!

pappy, i have been varying the speed and using the TS 'wow i still can't believe i got it', and it loves the go juice, but i don't care. It doesn't have the 'Grunt' of the diesel, but damn it's got the top end. I have 500 miles today and mashed it for a short time up a hill in tow haul. Wow!

ot, to be honest, i haven't checked the levels on anything, but i will tomorrow.

OT, yes the transmission dip stick is located on the passenger side (bright yellow) on my 2010 V-10, directly across from the oil dipstick and labeled pretty clearly and in a handy place to check the fluid. Also, the oil filter below is located in a good place as well, no knuckle busting when changing it out - Thank You Ford!

08, yeah funny about the colors we have to live with huh? No worries I was just happy as can be to find a V-10 to my liking here in Colorado and the black on black is actually growing on me - now if I lived in Phoenix, I might be in trouble but up here at altitude, I don't see it getting that hot? We'll see come Summer?

All I need now is to figure out how to deal with the rear parking aid (sensor) now that I put on the flat bed....The dash keeps giving me a problem with my back up aid. Can't seem to permanently turn it off? So now need to either find a way to disable it or maybe buy another one on eBay and see if I can install it on my flatbed. Should have robbed it off my truck box before I sold it...dang it!

Having fun with the new truck and as 08 says it's fun to mash it a little - nice power band!

Cheers from the Colorado Rockies friends
Leo

Tks guys. Was reading where top mounted d.s. for a/t fluid was eliminated in 09, but that was F150 w/5.4L. Maybe not so important, but at least you can still "easily check fluid" yourself on V10. Anyhow...

Just now starting to rethink about going back to a gasser. Almost got V10 in 03, but thought I was going to upgrade my TT. No crystal ball , cause didnt & now want.

Zane, on the back up sensor I think you should try to disable it. I have it on my rig and it is pretty much a joke.
Beeps when backing out of driveway and pavement gets closer to sensors.
Beeps at snow.
Beeps at rain.
Beeps at grass.
Well you get the picture. Doesn't take long to just ignore it.

Mmaxed, thanks.
Yeah for some reason I can <turn off> the parking aid using the dash right side buttons, but then every time I get back into the truck, it's somehow defaulted back <on>

Didn't mean to change the subject here. Should probably start a new thread to try and figure out how to disable it all together.....

Thanks for the input though, that could get pretty frustating I bet having it go off at every little obstacle??? I'll have to ask around to see what can be done...
