Making The Switch

Well I'm making the switch.
After 4 long years and 3 6.0 POWERCHOKES later, I'm going to a v10 f350.
Another contractor I know has 2 of them now, has had a total of 4. his latest 2 '05 and a new '08 are awesome. His '05 has 430's with the 4spd auto. his new one has 410's with the torqueshift. I
Iwould like to know if anyone has an '08 4x4 with 430's or 488's with the torqueshift behind there v10 and what they think.
Mines being ordered Monday with 430's limited slip.
thanks

Why are you trading in the 6.4? My v10 has 4.10s but it tows great, not quite as good as my Duramax LBZ was but it will certainly get the job done.

I embarrassed a new Chevy diesel up Horseshoe Bend Hill in Idaho yesterday. He was on my butt for about a mile and couldn't pass due to traffic. When we hit the double lane I went to pass and he was right on my tail, but after 20 seconds, I pulled away from him and left him in the dust. At the top of the hill, I was at least 1/2 mile ahead of him. He was so pissed that he finally passed me on some curves with no-passing and was lucky no one was coming the other way. He was an idiot, but I was proud of my V-10 wiping up on the Chevy.

1965-
Did you test drive a V-10 before ordering? If so, how does it compare with the 6.0 for moving the truck around? The 6.0 puts out great power - when they run right. I'd go drive one myself but they're hard to find around here.

z06505-
Same question only applied to the 6.4.

Pappy,
How much extra HP and torque are you getting from the Predator?

I love my V10 but if I was going to do alot of towing I would get the diesel.

Thanks Harley. That's the thing, I never tow but I do haul heavy sometimes. Diesel was a no-brainer when I bought the truck in 03 but if/when I replace it I will seriously consider the V-10, unless it's a slug.
The smart thing to do would be to keep the 6.0 for a while (it's paid off too) but getting a new one is too much fun!

I dont know too much about the 08 V10s but I do here good things. I have had diesels and V10s and I love them both. I will say this, the V10 is definetely not a slug. Mine has plenty of power and I have very few mods. I get about 11.5mpg in the city and about 14 on the highway, but I have a 6" lift with 35s and only 3:73 gears. The main reason why I made the switch is because I have more faith in the gas burners. My father has been working on Fords for 45 years and owns his own auto repair shop. I can't tell you how many V10s have come in for non engine related repairs and the motors are original with over 300k on them. The diesels last a long time too but if it goes down, you better have deep pockets to get it fixed. If you are just hauling heavy and not towing I personally would choose the V10, but that is just my opinion.

I don't know if I could venture a guess, but SOP is definate. There is a measurable difference in the performance and I just have it set on the middle, 91 octane and performance level. It seems to shift and down shift much more positive as well. Yes, this V-10 is a high RPM motor, and that's what it likes to do. The 5 speed TS tranny has worked flawlessly. I recently towed heavy for 1100 miles and in hot weather across many mountains from Idaho to New Mexico and the tranny temp never moved. I am very pleased with this truck. I ordered it with the $75 extra option of the "snow plow" equipment which is HD front springs and HD ratiator/tranny cooler. I believe this is a super deal and if anyone is ordering, they should add this option to the list, no matter where you live.

A freind of mine has a v-10 in his van, I'm not sure what year it is maybe 5-7 years old, and he had an engine failure. He said the mechanic told him that if the oil gets dirty on the v-10 an oil passage gets clogged up and the belt tensioner fails. He said he went to start it one day and it made a knocking noise and then would not turn over, apparently the belt tensioner failed and the v-10 is an interference engine and it locked up. Maybe ford has fixed that problem by now.

Even though gasoline is expensive, oil changes today, are not. Between coupons, do-it-youself, and competition of oil change quick-lube places, there is no excuse for not changing your oil every 3-4 thousand miles. A diesel oil change is a little different in the price category, like 2-4 times more than a gas rig, but you can still find deals if you look. I know some gas rig owners that change their oil evey 2k and use the cheapest oil they can find.Cost them around $13 for oil and filter.

Harley, I agree with you that diesels are expensive to fix over gas motors. But, I think one could maintain an old 6.9 diesel easier and cheaper than a V10. But the power difference is day and night.
