Even towing with a headwind I've never gotten much below 9 mpg. What rear end did you get? Doesn't sound right to me.

Got my new truck and have gone just a hair over 1200 miles, have spent $ 285.00 in gas so far...what gives ???? 4.1 MPG, basic city driving.
To go 1200 miles and get 4.1 MPG you would have used 293 gallons of gas. If you spent $285, that means you're buying gas at $0.97 per gallon. It's A LOT more expensive than that where I am!
Here gas is about $2.65 per gallon. $285 will get me 107.5 gallons of gas. 1200 miles divided by 107.5 gallons equals 11.2 MPG. It should get better than that once it's broken in.

All the reading I did on this site everyone with the V-10 seemed to be getting anywhere from 11-13 MPG on the highway, ofcoarse depending on how far your foot is pushed down.
Sorry about the $ 1.00 gallon thing
Anyhow, I have a 4:10 rear end, I'm glad to hear the mileage gets better with time. My last two 6.0 ( both gone before 40K miles ) were getting 18 on the highway, but I was paying $ 2.81 last fill up...eeks.
I filled up today for 2.24 gallon, lie-o-meter said 9.5, this was all city driving. I'm looking forward to plowing with this thing to see how it does with a huge pile of snow in front of it. I'm figuring the 4:10 should compensate for the lower torque.
Thanks again for the replies, I very much apprecite it.

Man what did you expect? Its a v-10 with 4.10's. I think some v-10 owners lie about their mpg just to make the v-10's sound good. I have talk to alot of ford techs and a couple of v-10 owners and ask them can a v-10 avg 13-14 mpg? They said yeah if you remove the tailgate, take some weight off, drive like a grandma and never rev your engine above 2 grand and maybe you can avg that. This is the reason I got a 5.4. I don't need the extra power as the v-10 but I didn't want to get too crappy of gas mileage. I am avg around 14.4 I believe and I have 50k miles on my truck. Also it's a 08 CC 4X4 auto with 3.73's.
What are the horsepower and torque ratings on the v-10 Ford?
V10
Max HP - 362 @ 4750 rpm
Max Torque - 457 @ 3250 rpm

You will not get the mileage of a diesel with the v-10, plain and simple. My friend has an 08 and he gets 10 mpg, no matter how he drives.
Most of the 6.4 diesel owners that I have talked to are getting around 12-13. Yes, they can buy a programmer and de-funk their sootbag, etc., for another $1500 and get good mileage. In the mean time your initial additional cost of $7,000 plus the added maintanance costs are many times more costly than my V-10 gasser. So, even at 10 mpg, it's a way cheaper overall cost than a new diesel, regardless of the maker....and no regen cycle either!!

Pappy, since this is a diesel site, and just about everyone on here with a 6.4 has done some kind of modification for mileage/power, I bet the average is higher than 12-13mpg. On top of that, the diesel will get significantly better mileage towing. And, you can romp on a diesel occasionally without significantly affecting fuel economy....Try that with the v-10.
Will the average person ever make up the cost of the diesel engine? Probably not. But than again, diesels arent aimed at people that just want to cruise around town.
Clearly, diesels are the more efficient engine. Diesels are here to stay, where as your V-10 Gas engine is a thing of the past. How many car manufacturers are considering putting v-10 engines in their new vehicles or concept vehicles?

I've got nothing against anyone that drives a diesel, none at all. However, the reliability of pickup diesel engines in the past has been pretty miserable to say the least, for a whole host of reasons. I know alot of folks like to mess with their diesel engines and I was once one of them. I just got tired of always doing something to improve or take care of some new issue. Not to mention the extra care one needs to take with diesels; fuel, anti-gel, water in fuel, glow plugs, injectors, etc. Too many problems for me, so I went back to a gasser. Yes, I know there have been afew lucky ones out there that have had zero problems, but they are in the minority from what I hear. I'll take a lower mileage when I am looking at many miles of trouble free reliability and decent power to do 95% of what a diesel engine can do for alot less money up front and continued hassles.

You have a plow on that truck too. I wish I got the mileage your getting. My 09 F550 V10 gets 6mpg around town (13,500# empty), and my 05 F450 6.0 (11,400# empty) got 8mpg around town. I gladly give up the 25% better fuel mileage in trade for 10% cheaper fuel and no problems. It's worth the 15% to me, to not have my truck sitting at the dealer every 2 months for problems. And the cheaper maintenance costs, and cheaper purchase price (and interest) has to equal the other 15% of the fuel costs. I'll take that trade off for reliability any day!
