Mileage expectation for V10 - WOW

I just took delivery of my 09 V10 with the ZF6 manual tranny. I drove it across the state (and then some) with a full load in the back (no trailer, but about 3000 lbs). Highway Mileage for 2000 miles of driving is 16.8 hand calculated and 17.1 on the little screen on the dash. When I get to town driving it drops to 14.5 or so. Neither one of these sound so bad. I thought the V10 were supposed to have horrible mileage. This is better than our fleet diesels. I do love the manual tranny. You automatic folks are missing out on a nice tranny. I know, dont want to shift etc.....

Your mileage is about as good as it gets with a V10. My 09 F550 4x4 (which weighs 13,000 pounds empty) gets 6 in Chicago, and 9.5 on the highway empty at 65mph. So, yes some get crappy mileage, some get decent mileage. I would assume your truck is not a crew cab 4x4?

I just made a solo trip from Salt Lake City to Garden Valley, Idaho (50 miles north of Boise) and averaged 12.2 doing 80-85. Not bad really. My old 2002 hopped up 7.3 would average 15.6 doing the same speed.

My truck is a F350 crew cab 4x4 long bed lariat. Just completed a run to Phoenix and mileage was a little lower. It was 15.8 for this trip. Still not bad. This engine is a little more sensitive to hills (even the smaller grades) than our diesels but runs great. I really am impressed considering the mileage that the new diesels are getting. Basically the same. or worse...

What gears do you have? I currently have a 97 PSD, that I am planning to sell. I almost bought the new 6.4 PSD a few months ago, but decided not to. Mostly because of all the new emission crap ruining the reliability and mpg.
I am looking at a few 6.8L V-10's on the lot. Your mileage has me more interested in them now! If you know what your axle ratio is I would appreciate the info!

I have the standard 4.10 gears. I think the manual tranny helps with the fuel mileage however. My company has nothing but diesels (almost all cummins) but I really think this truck is a better unit (overall) than the dodges. I am in ranching and I work the snot out of trucks. This truck is due for surgery in about 2 months (out comes the V10 and in goes a commonrail cummins) but I am actually pretty darn impressed with this V10. It scoots this truck around like nothing and I have been getting in the mid to high 15's pretty reliably on the highway and it is dropping to about mid to high 12's when I mix up city driving. Not too shabby. It gets as good a mileage as most of our newer Ford diesels. Now pulling a heavy load is a whole different story. The diesels win hands down. The pre-emissions diesels that is....

You don't need no stinkin' manual tranny. This new TorqueShift auto is a real Boss. So much so, that after 2010, you won't be able to get a hand shaker, period. Not enough takers for the hand shaker to warrant a manual tranny. Reason being that the Ford TorqueShift is the best automatic in the truck business, even better than the acclaimed Allison. VERY few problems with the Ford tranny and coupled with the Bodatious V-10, it's really a Boss setup!!

I used to get 14-15 with my '99 2-valve 5-speed V-10, I only get 10.5'ish with my auto-equipped '09 V-10. The T/S seems to be a decent transmission, although it gets 'lost' sometimes.

Like Pappy, I don't care for the Allisons. If that's true about the manual being gone for '10 and thereafter... that makes me sad and I wish I would have held out for a manual this time around, too. GM pissed me off when they disappeared theirs... and now Ford.

If your TS is getting "lost", you might try getting a Diablo Sport Predator programmer and setting it on the "middle" setting. I've been running mine for 40k and I have never experienced a "lost" shift. Just the opposite, my V-10 auto, runs with them all, and mostly much better than theirs.
