V-10 to 3.55

Has anyone changed a V-10 from the 4.10 to a 3.55? If so what was the result in performance and mpg? I am thinking about doing that but want to know if anyone else has before I do. I occasionally pull very heavy loads (over 20K) but only 5 miles or so. I don't think the higher gearing will matter on such a short haul on flat land. Like everyone else I am looking for better mileage in the "run around" mode.

When I owned my 2000 F-350 V10 it came with 3.73 gears and at the time only 3.73 and 4.30's were available. Do they offer 4.10's now? I would imagine the 4.10's would put the engine in a better RPM range when towing. I wish mine had 4.10's in it when I owned it. As far as the fuel mileage going to 3.55's they would probably help a good bit but to regain the cost of swapping gears and saving $5.00 at each fill up would take forever and you would loose a good bit of pulling grunt.

Standard axle ratio for a V-10 is the 4.10. I love that axle ratio for all around use. If you're not towing much, then get a 150 then you'll get up to 17mpg, but a 250/350 is made to tow and is alot heavier than other truckes, especially the 1/2 tons. I had a 3.55 in a F-250 back in 1995 with the 460 and my mileage was worse than those with the 4.10 as it was laboring all the time in 4th and you had to give it more gas to keep up. Stay with the 4.10 and you'll be happy all around.
