Hello friends,
Been lurking for some time now....
I've been a PSD'er for over ten years but with my latest issues in blowing motors and terrible DPF issues in my 6.4 that I'm considering going back to a gasser! See my posts in blowing engines left and right in the 6.4 forum.
And this was after owning and trading in my 06' 6.OH!
Anyway, I've got a few questions for you experienced V-10 Owners:
1. If my lemon law claim goes through and able to get another truck, can we still get a V-10.
2. I haul cattle and hay, does the V-10 rate about as well as the 6.4, I realize that it won't match real heavy loads as the diesel but interested to know what your experience has been. My biggest hay load is usually around 180 small squares (6 tons max.) on a 25' flatbed with two 7K axles.
3. MPG was always an issue between the two, but now a days I'm hearing that they are about equal at around 10 to 12 under normal driving and less under load. Is that about correct in your experience with the V-10
4. Living at high altitude (9k feet) is why my 6.4 is having all the difficulty from what I've been told. Not enough O2 to consume all the fuel during the DPF regen process where excess fuel gets into the crankcase and "makes" oil? Anyone living up here in the Colorado Rockies own a V-10 and having good luck? My understanding is that Ford has been making this motor for a long time and it's pretty bullet proof and trouble free. But do you run high octane in your rigs!
5. And lastly, what size tires and gear ratios you all running? I had 20" Wrangler ATS's on my 6.4 with 3.73 gears and liked the ride and the way they towed but if I get a V-10 want to make sure that I've got the correct combination?
Sorry for the long post but just don't know much about the V-10 but enough now that it might make sense to rid myself of the diesel and go back to a gasser! Thanks fella's, I appreciate any feedback!
Cheers from the Colorado high country~
Leo

I owned a '99 V-10 5-speed for 10 years (186K miles at trade) and I have a new '09 3-valve V-10 auto (16K miles.)
My trip from TX to AR and back last weekend netted me 13.2mpg running 75mph with camping junk in the back; I have noted a 2mpg loss between the 5-speed and the auto (and the old 2-valve vs new 3-valve motor.)
The only experience I have pulling a trailer with my old '99 was a 24' camper from Durango back to TX, I averaged 8-9mpg running 75-80mph on the interstate.
I have found the V-10 to be extraordinarily reliable, the only thing I ever did to my old '99 was change the plugs at 110K and replace the AC pump at 160K. That's it. I expect the 3-valve to be as good. Towards the end of the '99's life, I had to run Premium to keep it from detonating; my '09 is already starting to get picky about fuel and I'm having to fuel up with name-brand gas (Shell/Chevron/Texaco) to keep it from knocking.
I believe the V-10's are still available for 2010 but if you do a search you might be able to find more current info here.
I think you are stuck with 4:10 rears, you may have to go to aftermarket if you want to run bigger tires but someone here also may have a better solution to that, particularly hauling loads at high altitude. Much of it depends on your setup (chip/intake/exhaust, etc)
...it also may be easier to start in those cold Colorado mornings!
Just a quick note. 2010 is the last year for the v10 in the 250's and 350's.
2011 models will only have v10's in the 450 and 550's, but the 2011's will have the new 6.2L v8. I just took delivery of my 2010 V10 about 3 weeks ago. I'm pretty sure you can still place an order for a 2010, for a bit longer.

And you won't get 20" wheels with any of the gas motors in 2010... only with the diesel.
Ain't that the truth! I really wanted the 20's (for the larger tire not the wheel!) Seems Ford is doing everything in their power to "force" a buyer into a diesel. I settled for the 18's and got my V10!
What's funny is they must assume every truck off the line is a diesel.....my V10 had an information card hanging from the turn signal lever that discussed all the features of my new 6.4L........would have been nice to have a card discussing the 6.8L that is actually under the hood. No big deal, but odd.

If you get a new V-10 with 4.33 gears, you won't notice any difference between the pulling power of your 6.4 with 3.73 gears. Yes, maybe a little less fuel mileage, but not by much, and the difference in oil changes, fuel filters, etc, is unreal. I have 48k on my 2008 V-10 and have hauled heavy all over the western states up and down mountains with no effort and I have the standard 4.10 gears. I also have the 18" wheels and like them just fine. The new tow/haul feature is awsome. You'll love the V-10 over the "pain-in-the-ass" diesels, no matter what brand it is. If you get to order a new one, make sure you add the snow plow option for $80, it's worth every penny even if you don't plan on plowing snow.

What type of trailer do you consider "hauling heavy". I am looking at a 2010 V10 F350 SRW Supercab longbed 4wd with 4.10 gears and I will be towing a 26' fifth wheel that weighs about 8K loaded. I am considering upgrading the 5'er to a about a 30' in the 10K weight range and wonder how the V10 will do with the wind resistance and weight of a 30' fifth wheel.
If you are only going to be towing once in a while, then stick with the 4.10, but if you are going to be towing alot during the year, then I'd go for the 4.30. I also stuck with the 18" wheels, but if you go with the 20" wheels, then for sure go with the 4.30 rear. My bumper pull is about 8-9k loaded. The first year I had my V-10, I towed it probably 10k with no problems pulling hills here in the west. I haven't towed it much this year.

The new Raptor version of the 6.2L is rated at 411-hp and 434 ft-lbs. Have numbers been released for the SD version of the 6.2L?
