We have kept records at work and here are the results. We average 12,000 miles a year. The trucks are 06 4x4 crew cab chassis cabs, with service bodies. The diesel has 4.10 and the v-10 has 4.30. For the diesel we have 12k miles at 9.83 mpg=1220 gallons at 4.24 gallon=5175$ For the v-10 we have 12k miles at 7.68 mpg at 3.65 gallon=5685$ So the diesel is 500 dollars a year cheaper in fuel. But with the diesel costing 6000 more upfront it only takes 12 years for the diesel to break even. I didn't even factor in way more oil, filters etc. Then the big kicker is the v10 needed a new battery. The diesels have been nothing but headaches. As a side note the trucks are towing a skidsteer trailer with a cat 247 so we weight about 24k pounds.
Yeah, well this is a diesel web site and all, but......there are alot more problems associated with a diesel engine than a gasser, and you know it. Bad fuel, plugged fuel filters, leaking gaskets, plugged soot collectors, expensive oil changes, ad nosium. Look, I am a former 7.3 owner and loved that truck for what it did for me, but, since Ford did away with that engine, I'm a die-hard V-10 fan for all of the reasons I just listed. This V-10 is one super engine and combined with the TorqueShift tranny, is as good as it gets IMHO. If it didn't perform, I would say so, and do something different. I am here to tell you all, if you are looking to switch from diesel to gas, don't overlook the Ford V-10 as it is a Boss setup.

Let's also not forget the 6.4L gets worse fuel mileage than the 6.0. You can also add on new emissions crap to the 6.4 (DPF) that will need replaced down the road. The comparison is hardly close.

This is the kind of post that I've been looking for for a while, some actual data instead of moronic hearsay that is commonplace on these forums.
It's unfortunate that the diesel's high purchase price negates the fuel savings. And that's before discounting future cash flows (ie you could invest the 7k and make ~7% on your money for the time you owned the vehicle)
I now have about 1,500 miles on my truck, I am getting 10 mpg city and 13 mpg expressway. With my previous truck (see signature) I was getting 10 mpg city and 17 mpg expressway.

How big of a job would it be to remove the 6.0 and replace it with a V10? What parts would I need to purchase? Would it bolt up directly to my torqueshift trans?

I have had a Dodge Hemi and a Ford 460 in similar trucks. They were better at mileage and cheaper, but when it come to outright pulling a load inbad terrain the diesel just plain outpulled they enough to justify the $6400 I just spent on a F450 CC crew cab 4:88 diesel. I can never see myself back in a gas burner if I have any serious hauling. I have a construction company so I haul everyday .
I'm with you Capt. I had a dodge 3500 V-10 and the difference in outright pulling ability isn't close! I'll stay with my Diesel! And my 6.0 gets close to 10 pulling 12k in the mountains with some serious grades.

You smoke blowers need to stay on your own topic forums. If you haven't driven a new V-10 with torqueshift tranny, then you can't comment with credability. Next time you change your oil at $100 plus, just think of my gasser at $19. Then there's the .50 cent + difference in fuel costs, etc. Even towing every day, my V-10 is no slouch.

Pappy I could not agree more, As a previous 7 year owner of an 7.3L, this 2005 V10 can hang with a chipped 7.3L. And the troqueshift tranny makes a huge difference in performance pulling.
I hope that you are correct. mY son just bought the V10 in a F 250. I agree the trans is better then anything I have had in the past. The only problem we have seen is the the F 250 with 9800 gvw set down 2 full inches when we put our trailer and tracter on. 6800LB we had just taken it off my Dodge 3500 it lifted 1 inch. I would not think a F250 would squat that much. It pulled it fine. But we know 6800 is not alot.

I know that my F-250 V-10 squats lower than my 2008 6.4 PSD F-550 when loaded with the same trailer, however that is not exactly comparing apples to apples...now is it?
The Dodge and the Ford rear springs may not be set up in the same manner. I know that my F-250 will lower about 2" before it settles upon the over-load springs.
Another part of the equation may be that with the V-10 weighing in much less than the weight of a diesel, you don't have that additional weight front end counter balance to off set the rear end lowering.
Either way, the V-10 is a great motor and will perform many hard working miles with asking very little in return.
