First Diesel ever owned

Hello, newbie here to the forum and the diesel world, bought a 2006 Ford F250 with 6k miles on it. Inspected it, bought it at a dealership so maybe a lease, but hey its mine now.

My first and foremost question that i keep getting many different answers to it. I want more get up and go and quicker throttle response, i here superchips, programmers, exhaust, intake, and other jargon i have no idea.

What would be a good first mod that i would notice a difference and wouldn't have to upgrade down the road for a while?

Thanks
Mark,
Ontario California

indeed.. welcome.... i have been on here for like 3 weeks and have had pretty much every question answered that i asked. if you just read around then you will learn stuff that you might have needed to ask later on..
but back to YOUR question..
it all depends on your budget..

aftermarket air intake will not help power until you reach +500hp, it will only reduce filtration.. so not a recommendation..

exhaust is always a good first upgrade because it not only helps power and MPG, but it also adds looks and sound... the best kind of exhaust would be a turbo-back, not cat-back... turbo-back is pretty self explanitory.. it is a full exhuast (besides headers) replacement = way more airflow.... cat-back is about half way replacement because it's from the catalytic (spelling) convertor...

programmers are good after exhaust, ask around for the best one.. i have the same truck as you pretty much.. so i will let you know right now, if you want speed, do NOT get the Banks six-gun... been there done that.. hated it..

bigger injectors and upgraded turbo... but once you get to those you will want to do other upgrades like beefing up your studs because we all know PSD's have head gasket "issues"

but as "first-off" upgrades, exhaust and programmer..

Hello and welcome. I too am new to the forum and diesel world; however, I have already sunk quite a bit of time for research, effort, and $$ into my truck so I do have some limited experience. IMO installing a programmer is the best bang for your buck. Edge, Banks, Bully dog, and SCT make excellent products. For around $500 you can get the edge evolution tuner, which I find suits my needs. I used SCT also and loved it, but the model I tried didnt have a digital display, so I opted to take the edge product instead which allows you to digitally monitor your temperatures. A tuner will give you significantly more power (~100 hp and 200 ft*lbs torque!!!!), and better fuel milage, as long as you dont trample the gas pedal. It works by changing the programming of your engine and removing limitations that are set by the factory program. Be careful because some jerk dealers will void your warranty if they find out you were using a tuner to boost power, so make sure you return the truck to the stock program before taking it in to the shop. Also, be sure to get boost and EGT (exhaust gas temp.) guages because the tuner will cause your truck to run so much better that you can do damage if you drive like you stole it for prolonged periods without being careful. The edge display does monitor these parameters; however, I have analog guages as backup so I can identify false readings. To get the most out of your tuner, you should get a nice air intake (i use AirAid), and larger exhaust to reduce your EGT's and get better turbo performance. Go with the 4" exhaust (I have heard 5" causes a lack of backpressure that can reduce power). Duals has no real performance advantage over single besides the look and sound. I tried both cat-back and turbo-back exhaust systems, and I found that I get much faster turbo response with the turbo back system. Anyway, I hope this helps. And if you get a tuner, intake and exhaust, be prepared to spend alot of money on fuel and new tires because of showing off doing burnouts and beating your friends mustangs in drag races!

i agree with it all.. except that 5" causes a lack of backpressure.... because most GOOD aftermarket exhaust systems (turbo-back) comes with a 3.5" down pipe from the turbo because nothing bigger will fit there (without severe mods).. so you virtually have the same exact air flow if you look at it like this.....
when you turn on a fire hose that is 4" big and put a 3.5" clamp around it, it will reduce it to 3.5" of water coming out.... when you turn on a massive 5" water hose and put a 3.5" clamp around it......... i think everyone can get the point from here...
so a 5" system is mainly for the sound (why i got it), keeping the egt's lower, and looking mean... and if you ever are pushing +500hp you will prolly need the 5"
as for a good programmer talk to the guys from dp-tuner.com or innovativediesel.com...... they can get you an SCT for your truck.. what you do is buy it, they ship it to you and then you email them info from your truck.. then they will come up with tunes SPECIALLY designed for your truck and they email these tunes back to you.. you put these into truck and WHAM.. but if you just want a plug and play tuner, the SCT is fine...
it sounds kinda complicated but it's not that bad..

A good place to start is a 4'' exhaust. There are many exhaust MFGs out there Banks, MBRP, Silverline and the list goes on. There also lots of Tuners too. SCT, Edge, Super Chips, Banks and so on. Oh yeah, Welcome to the TDS!
