New to forum & maybe diesel..need help
I've never owned a diesel. Currently own a 454 Jimmy gasser used only to pull a 7000# travel trailer, 6000 to 10000 miles a year on 3 or 4 trips. Lots of 6-8% grades in my travels. Now seems like a good time to look for a diesel to upgrade my pulling power. The 15 mile 8% grade just out my back door brings my 454 down to about 30 mph before I get over the top. This is OK, but I'd like to improve. Specifically, I'll be looking for an older Excursion. I like the SUV option because I travel with 3 dogs and like them to be in the climate controlled rig with me. Just starting to gather info so thought I'd come to the experts. What year (probably in the 2000 to 2004 range) should I be looking at and what engine for least problems? Optimum mileage range? I understand that the 6.0 that came out sometime in this area was beset with problems, and that the 7.3 goes forever. I'm just not sure what I should be looking for. Seem to be some good deals out there right now if one looks hard enough. Thanks for your help.
