New tunes for BTS transmission

I have seen posts where people are getting the BTS valve body and will need new tunes to take advantage of that. I am getting a new BTS transmission in April and wonder if I am going to need new tunes for my F5? Thanks

Wrong! DP would still tune the chip for a built trans by either John or Brian

Ern. Nope. You're Wrong.

Get your facts straight and know what you're talking about before you correct someone so aggressively.

Telling me you disagree and think I'm wrong, or just being polite is always a much nicer way of posting, especially when you're wrong in your correction.

This has already been posted on a few other PSD forums.

Ask Diane, or Jody himself.

Jody does not need to tweak or adjust his tunes if a John Wood tranny or a JW valve body is added, unlike a BTS VB.

Not only did Jody not tweak any of the tunes in my Excursion when I had John install one of his built 4R100's back in December of '07, but Jody also told me himself, while I drove him from Holtville to Modesto last Wednesday, that he doesn't need to retune for a JW tranny.

Something to do with the pump and how it's flow is routed with a mod'ed tranny vs. calling for more line pressure when the shifts are short in hardware. I wish I could find where I read that, but I can't remember.

Jody and John have been working very closely together for about 2 years now. If you have any questions as to why you don't need new tunes if you just recently got a new chip I would email Jody or John. Though getting a complete rebuilt trans I believe would be different.

No harm, no foul, caryt. I've followed you posts for a loooooong time (my join date is incorrect. It got messed up when TDS changed over to this forum setup from the old) and you give tons of great info. So I know how helpful you are.

If Dp "tuned" a chip for a stock trans and later the owner upgraded the trans to either a JW or BTS I would think they would retune the chip as their is a big difference between a stock trans and a JW or BTS. Usuall tuners make adjustments to "help" a stock trans work with the increased power which a built trans won't require. I have talked to John about this many times and am well aware of the help John has given Dp and the benifit this has been.

John was actually the first to tell me I wouldn't need to upgrade my tunes, when I made my appointment by phone with him, to have his built tranny installed in my Excursion back in '07.

I dropped Jody an email and he confirmed the tunes would be fine.

Just off the top of my head, line pressure, shift points and converter lock up are the three main tranny tuning elements in a custom tune.

Of those three, line presssure would be the only thing that would really affect going from a stock tranny to a built tranny.

Now, I didn't pick Jody's brain on this particular item while we were heading up to Modesto, but going by what I know about custom Gen 2 Lightning tuning (where line pressure is kind of a controversial issue) if I had to assume and guess, I'd say Jody's custom tunes are on the very conservative side when it comes to line pressure.

John doesn't use the thin plate in the valve body that BTS and Transgo uses, that the end user needs drills holes into, in order to set up the shift firmness.

So if I had to guess, I'd say that was probably a factor, as well as John and Jody working closely together for the past few years, when it comes to tranny input tuning of the codes.

All that is just a guess of course.

Diane will probably come along any minute and say, "nice guess, but ern, wrong Stew!"

Stewart is 110% correct. For a BTS since Brian does some things differently Jody does need to adjust the tunes. Just like he has to make adjustments for an ATS, Suncoast or FTVB. They all do things differently.

Cary, not only has John helped Jody, but Jody also helps John. Its called working together to accomplish things. What Jody does as far as tuning the trans Jody gives that info to John and John helps Jody by telling Jody whether it works or not. We do this with all of Jody new tunes before they go into the field. What is accomplished is John's customers are happy with their shifting and their new trans or VB.
