Hi Calpryro,

Many of our customers have recieved fuel mileage increases with Jody's 80 hp econo. We suggest that this tune be used as a daily driving tune for highway or long trips. However it has been noted that alot of our cusotmers have had a difficult time keeping their right foot out of it. With the added horse power it is quite a pop from stock. If used correctly the you should see gains of 2-4 from what has been reported back to us.

My own comparision with a 8900 lb. excursion I have had anywhere from 1-1.5 better driving around town and 2 better on long trips consistantly. The best thing to do is always make sure your truck is in good maintence and I always run a fuel additive at every fill up. I have been known for adding more then is really necessary.

You may want to also post this up in the regular forums to see what our customers have to say.

Diane

Thanks for the reply. I purchased one today. Additionally, I filled the tank and I will do a final fuel mileage calculation bone stock before using the DP chip. I will report back in a few weeks with the 80 Econo results.

I got the tuner and did one final tank full of diesel prior to the DP Tuner and accurately measured the fuel mileage at 12.7 MPG in general around-town driving.
After installing the Tuner and using another full tank, I measured the mileage at 16.1 MPG.
total improvement of 3.4 MPG.

02 Excursion 7.3L

Jody has been just the best to work with. I just got my chip back from him with the adjustments we discussed and I am VERY SATISFIED!

As far as mileage is concerned, when I bought my Ex 1.5 years ago I drove it back from OH to IL and got an average of 15.3 mpg (as calculated via long division -- not the lie-o-meter). With DP's Econo tune I am well above that around town! In fact I am seeing close to 22 mpg all hwy as calculated on long trips and the lie-o-meter says as much as 25.8 most of the time! As I said, I am VERY SATISFIED!!

My 99 got a jump of 1.5 MPG daily driving, but I nave not taken it on the highway to get an overall cruising reading. I have not driven it in months due to the high price of diesel, in fact last year I got a prius, and this year a Camry Hybrid. I didn't like the prius other than it got 65 MPG.

I did find the ultimate MPG booster though. Park the truck and ride a bike.

Unless you can demonstrate pedaling that bike & towing 10,000 lbs, that solution's really not going to work for most people here.

...although I would like to see that at a truck rally!

My current '01 truck while running the 80hp econo tune seems to be getting the same fuel mileage as my old stock '99.

The fuel mileage has improved since this winter though. I haven't gone back to the stock tune to see if the improvement was from the chip or from summer fuel.

A question about getting better fuel economy. Would making the tranny shift early help? I noticed my truck won't shift into high gear until I reach 45mph or so. Is this something that can be changed with the chip?

Tomorrow I'm going to carry my car to the drag strip. The truck might have to make a couple of passes as well I guess the fuel mileage of this tank is not gonna be too good.

I know that Jody doesn't come on here much - But I do have a question and was hoping that it will get back to him....

From my driving I have noticed I get better mileage in the 80hp tow tune then I do in the 80hp econo tune... Regardless of weather the Van is empty or full..... Towning is a different story obviously....

I know that the 80 Tow is more responsive and shifts firmer - Is it because the vehicle gets up to speed quicker - Or is it something else??? I didn't program the tunes so I don't understand the in's and outs...

Sorry, I don't get on here that much either...

I don't have the 80 hp TOW tune in my selections, but I do have the 60 hp TOW one in there. I understadn that Jody puts full trans pressure all the time on that tune to ensure quick, strong shifts. Plus he locks the torque converter almost all the time so that you backdrive the engine on decels. I personally don't tow anything major so I don't use that pgm much, but there IS a definite difference in how the truck drives between ECON and TOW tunes. Hope this helps.

On my 2001 Excursion with 80hp economy I went from 14mpg city to 17mpg and from 19mpg hwy to 24mpg. I have put A LOT of miles on this tune and the above numbers are accurate! DP Tuner all the way.

If you're reading the trip meter I can see how you might think that. My trip meter, when in Econ mode and reset at the beginning of a long trip will tell me as much as 28 mpg's!! I have to challenge your 24 mpg's as being accurate as compared to a 300 mile trip and dividing against gallons used. On the hwy towing nothing I see mileage in the teens -- best is 17 lately. My tires are stock and I drive >80 most of the time so that's a factor.

Heck, on decel I can get as much as 99 mpg's!!

Between the 80 econ and stock, I can't tell any difference in fuel economy. I've gone back and forth. If I want to save fuel, I just gotta stay out of the boost - generally just under 2k rpm.

I now also use a Fitch catalyst

....and I don't see any difference before and after on Jody's Econo tune.

Great advice for anyone here is to get the DP tunes and keep your foot out of it.
