We are all burning off range grass the last couple of weeks (controlled, and on purpose, no DPF involved) and one of the local volunteer departments shows up with 2008 F350 4x4 brush rig, auto, pto option, bright red!!! Nice truck.
Exhaust tip looked different. I crawl underneath. NO DPF!!! NO CAT!!!! They said it came that way! What the heck??? Mr. Firetruck builder take it off? Ford sells fire trucks with out them (they cause brush fire)??? How ironic would that be?
It sounds like a Detroit and a 747 mixed together. When they high-idle it for pumps it sounds like it is going to take off straight up.. Very cool. I want that.
What gives? Anyone see this also?
Also worthy of mention it had an alternate air intake that runs on outside of truck up the A-post and gets air at top of cab level. Wonder what other mods under that hood there be??? Arrrrrrrr

im guessing it was designed for "off road use only" thereby allowing them to get a truck without a DPF. Just a guess...someone will come along shortly with a better answer
Did it have a factory looking delete pipe? This might be away of using factory parts to get rid of the combo.
It would be funny to see the dealers face when you tell them it's all stock.

No doubt the truck has been "upfitted" by an aftermarket "upfitter". They buy a stock truck off the assembly line and modify it as needed. We had many trucks in the military that were modified this way, we ran JP-5 jet propellant in our diesel Ford pickups that were used on the flightline. The intake snorkel is a great option for off road travel, had it on a Jeep CJ-7.

It was a departments that is about 45 miles away. I do get through there though, and I know one guy on that department. It will take a little time but I WILL get a picture.
I didn't look close enough regarding the delete pipe. It was dark out and I was using a flashlight. They "thought" it came from Ford that way, but who knows. Man would that people cool or what!
I can see it now: I waltz up to the parts counter, flash my SMX Number for Farm/Off Road Use and then hand him the parts numbers for a no-restriction exhaust system. I'm gonna work some more on this.

After reading this post, I called one of my nephews who is a cop. They have 2 K-9 units that are diesel F350's, both 08's, I'm waiting for the pictures. He has a duramax, knows what a dpf is, and says these Ford units DO NOT have the dpf. This is an interesting thread. Hopefully it won't be locked or pulled.
a fire co. about 15 miles from me just got a 08 f550 psd and that hting has all the emission crap on it. i was at one of my customers body shop and they had the bed off waiting for a custom one, so i looked around thinking that it would be a straight pipe like most of their fire trucks but it had one of these on it.

i know a few firefighters and their trucks have always had the emmitions removed
the locals got a 90's ford diesel brush truck they say your intake would be to keep it dry (streams) they probaly run offroad as idk about where you are but in my area they run offroad in their rigs (yes its the good stuff over 500 ppm) and those things fly with 4.10 rear and no od unit
they can remove the exhust emmitions and that to create the horsepower numbers needed for a unit like that (dont know why gov lets them)

Up fitters remove the DPF's without problems. Monroe truck equipment was selling 4 large containers of "super low mileage take off ford Diesel particle filters" after fulfilling a contract to send upfitted trucks to an overseas Market that did not require DPF's.
I know a good tuner can remove the DPF programming from an 08+ silverado. Don't ask me how I know this though.

I am a firefighter by trade and this is the first time I have heard of any factory altered 08's. However I can see how they would exempt a truck designated for wildland fire use. I wouldn't be a concerned about the DPF ®en mode starting a back fire, we could put that out. I would never want one of those things going into regen mode while I am parked with grass/brush underneath it. Chiefs don't like it when you tell them you burned up a 75k truck + equipment. I have seen vehicles burned up from exhaust starting fires underneath them, I imagine the 1100 deg would guarantee one. I am guessing the fire dept. or firetruck builder that speced the truck out was thinking ahaead and had all the exhaust emissions removed and regen stuff turned off. Thats good thinking and I will have to bring it up when we spec out some new brush trucks seeing how these emmision requirements are a reality from now on.
As for the air intake my best guess is they are just trying to keep it as high as possible to keep it out of the smoke/dust. Smoke lacks the O2 and can choke your engine out in the heat of battle. We also have to change out the filters on our 2000 7.3 brush trucks after almost every grass fire because they get so caked up with the black soot they can't even be blown out.
