Talking Fun at the drag strip

Well it's been a long time since I've posted on here since I've been busy with work. I just got back from Terre Haute Indiana for the Scheids Diesel Extravaganza (the first diesel event I've ever been to). Boy let me tell you it was awesome. Hundreds of sled pulling pickups. Tons of super fast drag racing pickups. Tons of seminars and dyno fun. Hundreds upon hundreds of people with amazing diesel pickups from the fast to the bizzare. It exceeded my expectations and was in one word...Amazing.

Anyways, it got me so excited about diesel racing that I bit the bullet and went drag racing last night. I took my old Ford '89 IDI Non-turbo and shifted her to a best of 19.41 at 69.11 MPH in the quarter mile (better than I thought I'd do). It was slow, smokey, and loud but funner than all get out. And there were a few slower vehicles out there.

Then I raced my '01 crewcab, long box, Powerstroke. I set my DP tuner on the 120 race setting (which I had never really throttled it hard in that setting before). I put her in four wheel drive and gave her a nice 5 or 8 psi boosted start. Oh my word. The 120 race setting is amazing!!! I got no turbo lag, the shifts were perfect, and the TC lockup was incredible. I crossed the line in 15.14 at 88.90 miles per hour. I was already doing 71.42 at 9.64 seconds when I crossed the 1/8 mile mark. My dad felt that we could get more top end speed if it wasn't in four wheel drive. He did a nice burn out to get the tires to warm up and gave it a shot. Even with newer all season tires, limited slip rear diff, and only a 2 or 3 psi boosted start, she started to spin sideways just off the line. He peddled it past the 60 ft. mark trying to get it to quit spinning. She was chirping the tires up until about 1/4 track (most cars weren't having problems getting traction either). He still manged to pull off a mid 16 (don't know the exact time on this one 'cause my dad has the time slip) at 87.6 miles per hour (I remember that part). I think being in 2WD helped the top end speed like we suspected.

Boy was it fun! I didn't expect to run that good. I figure with a few more runs and some tire changes we could have easily been in the 14's. A big thanks to DP tuner, Pure Diesel Power, and Black Widow Diesel for all the goodies that made my pickup a pure joy to race.

Wow, small world. It's Toreador Red with black along the bottom edge. It has a canopy on it. How about yours? I watched a couple 7.3's run. One dark green one was running in the 13's, and he had International badges all over.

i would say boost up in 4x4 like you did and after you get it rolling a little, throw it in 2 so you get the top end. thats what i did the one time i raced my truck, and that how my buddy does his cummins.

Nice! Yeah, I'm a bit color blind in the dark. That thing really goes. You've done a nice job on it. Maybe someday I'll put more money into mine.

Well it looks like you have a good foundation to build on and thats how you get started. I just do one thing at a time as I have the funds and time to work on it. One thing I can say is I do my own work and that saves alot right there.

I'm gonna work on a few things in the next few weeks and be back out there again trying to hit the 12's.

Well, we had some fun out on the Spokane drag strip again tonight! It was great to see a bunch of Fords and Dodges spankin' the Duramaxes. I ran my newly aquired (picked it up this week), 1998 12 valve Cummins Turbo Diesel (short cab long box) with a 5 speed manual. She has only had the fuel/air ratio control tweaked (ARC) so she boosts a little quicker but really gets no more fuel than stock once the boost is up. I got it down to a 19.02 at 69.8 miles per hour (only a little quicker than my old naturally aspirated Ford was). I'm Gonna' turn up the fuel and play with her quite a bit more before next weekend's race.

My dad ran the '01 powerstroke and brought her down into the 14's. He made two passes at 14.9 something and his last run was a 14.89 at 89.8 miles per hour. The old Ford was going over 72 mph at the 1/8'th mile running a 9.41. Not bad for a crew cab long box with stock oil and injectors. Even though she's pretty quick as it is, I think some more time can be squeezed out of her if we got better boosted starts (although I don't know how well the tranny will like it). I'm also going to check for boost leaks because she seems to be a tad lagy. Plus, if we got rid of the canopy, removed the tailgate, and ran without a passenger we'd be a bit lighter.
I think we are turning out some pretty good HP and torque numbers with it. A buddy of mine has a '08 dodge 1500 with the 345 horsepower 5.7 hemi and he's been running consistant 16's and 16.1's at 87 miles per hour and that's with a much lighter vehicle.

Anyways, it was fun. I can't wait till next weekend!!!

Last day at the Drags

We out last night for the last open drag racing event in Spokane for the summer.

My dad ran the powerstroke and it trucked away running between 15.0 and 15.1 seconds at 88 MPH pass after pass. He didn't launch as harshly as he did before for fear of the stock transmission (we reviewed a video of it under a 4X4 hard booste launche a few weeks ago and could hear the tires chirp on take off).

I raced my dodge again, but I had installed a boost fooler, K&N air filter, and a fuel stop plate in it this last week (#11 TST slid forward 3/4 of the way). This time I had to peddle her a bit off the line cause she would spin and hop a little in 2WD (starting in second on my five speed manual trans.). She smokes a little on the low end but clears up quite nicley above 1600 RPM. I was hitting 30 lbs. of boost at 2500 RPM (just before the governor starts to de-fuel). Best pass of the night was a 17.3 at 80.1 MPH. A mid 90's powerstroke with a chip, five speed, intake, and exhaust ran a 17.6 or something around there. Needless to say, I was tickled pink that my mods had made that much of a difference. That was a much more satisfying pass than the 19 second run at 70 last weekend.
