CONGRATS to both of you or I should say him, you and your wife since you are ones that made this achievement possible. As far as the C/S don't count on it ... it's done sometimes in the RAG and can be changed at his first operational squadron (our youngest's was) and is given to him not his choice ... after that it's fairly fixed in stone from then on out.
Larry
Thank you Larry and yes, the congrats should go to him, not me, I'm just proud and happy for him. Obviously it's a rather ambiguous goal he has set out on, and we/he have no illusions as to his chances and he's trying to stay focused at the task at hand. Trust me he has a back up plan in place and he's happy with either outcome.
The C/S is a pipe dream and just in the discussion stages for fun.

How are ya'll getting up there. We have a non-stop on Southwest into Baltimore.
He's taking the shuttle out of Orlando to BWI and I'm picking him up the following week. Naval Academy Summer Seminar is only a week long and there are three sessions. They have to be cleared out of there a week before plebe summer starts. There are a total of about 1,800 (3x 600 per week) candidates participating and usually half of the candidates get the nod for an appointment. That's why we're all so excited, his qualifications are right on target and this will help him distinguish himself for his Blue and Gold Officers evaluation next August. As you know it's all about grades, College Board test scores and physical fitness.

Your son sounds like a fine young man with a good head on his shoulders, John. You must be very proud.
The apple does not fall far from the tree.

Just joking as he knows, but I thought I'd give him a little shot. What are friends for? Jake actually looks pretty good in uniform, nice tall, trim looking kid! (young man ) best manners of any I have met lately.

We never got very involved in either of our son's training to be Naval Aviators and it's now been some years since they started, but IIRC at least or Pilot training there are two basic phases the Basic Training and the Advanced and you aren't assigned to a specific type a/c i.e. Jet/Prop/Rotor etc. until the end of Basic and they use all of what they see in Basic Training to make that decision and the slots for each are fixed. When our oldest went thru RIO now WSO for the FA-18 all this training was at Pensacola and our youngest went to Basic out in Corpus Christie and Advanced at Meridian, MS. However this info is between 5 and 10 years old.
If he does eventually get his wings, invest in the real 14Kt "Wings of Gold" and be had each inscribed with their name and a two or three word "Personal Message" and told them they must wear them and not worry about loosing them since we would be their "Wing Insurance".

Congrats for you and your son. What a great experience he will have this summer! I am a former Naval Aviator and now an airline pilot. We flew into DCA last week and had a couple on that were going to their son's Naval Academy graduation. Hopefully, that will be you in five years. Fair winds and following seas to your son.

Thank you very much, I'll pass that on to him.

John - I work in College Park which is about 30 minutes to the Academy. I go past BWI everyday to and from work and home. If you need something just ask.
Congratulations to your son and your family. God Bless.

Again all, thanks and I'm back!
Well, I've actually been back for weeks but we are literally working on his application almost all day, every day!
I'm very happy for Tut as he's in for the time of his life rooting on for his son. His son has made a major accomplishment getting accepted and Tut deserves some of the credit because....it's all in the principals, honor and perseverance that the parents instill in their children to make it that far!
Well, things have not gone well with the USNA for my son. He was well on his way to becoming triple Q'ed or triple qualified for competition to become appointed. He qualified academically and also physically with his CFA (candidate fitness assessment and then came the DoDMERB (Department of Defense Medical Examiner Review Board)....perfect health but unfortunately he has a "Slight Color Perception" or "Partial Color Blind" and that is not allowed as an officer in the Navy. It also disqualifies you for Annapolis even if you take the Marine Corps option. NROTC is also out. He was crushed, he was well on his way for an appointment and was blown out of the water. Not only did he lose his college choice but a life style that he's been working on for 2 years now.
One glimmer of hope is that in this process the USMA (West Point) picked him up as a candidate and he's considering being a Cadet there.
So Higgins, Go Army, Beat Navy.

You can appeal DODMERB, if you can get a test from a normal opthamologist.
I can't pass color vision on the Ishira plates (the number/circle things) if I am dehydrated or tired. Depending on how well of a nights sleep he got and how hydrated he was that may factor in.
The Farnsworth Lantern (FALANT) test is another valid test, and I can pass that one all the time.
For what it's worth, my color vision is "good enough" and I am a Naval Aviator. Didn't go to Canoe-U though, I went to OCS via the BDCP program.
Also, if he wants to be in the Navy, he can be a Staff Corps officer such as Supply Corps even if he is colorblind, and go to OCS. The BDCP program is a good way to get in there, they pay active duty pay and allowances while you go to school and you go to OCS after graduation.
A good place to search around the site and see how to get around DODMERB problems is www.airwarriors.com. I'm one of the moderators over there, user name of MasterBates (hey, my CO picked my callsign, not me).
If he wants another alternative to the USNA he should look into the United States Merchant Marine Academy here: United States Merchant Marine Academy
You can serve in ANY branch of the US Military upon graduation and if he is trying to get a spot in the flight program his chances are better here because this school gets as many spots each year in flight school as all the other academies but there is less competition because the student population is significantly smaller than the other academies. He can also graduate with an engineering degree and a United States Coast Guard License to work on commercial ships as a Maritime Officer. It's worth taking a look for his sake to continue his pursuit of a combined military/college career.
