2006-7 Desert High School Basketball MVP
2006-7 High Desert League MVP
2006-7 Southern California Basketball Coaches Division V Player of the Year
Now plays for Norwich University in Vermont... on an academic Scholarship in Engineering.
6'11.5" 255 doing well in his first year....
#34 Robert Thurman.... 60 rebounds so far
averaging 8.1 points per game and has only
175 minutes of playing time so far. Started 6
games in a row now out of the 10 he's played.
Also has 19 blocks, 8 in his last game! He even has
6 steals. One of the players at Norwich is the son
of a famous Dallas Cowboys, Jim Jeffcoat I think is
his Dad's name.
I have heard from a Division 1 Coach and it may turn
out well for Rob, not that he needs help. Good grades
solid citizen (was Kern County's delegate for Boy's State)
and awarded the Good Scientist Award at the California State
Science Fair. His experiment mate is going to CAL Berkeley...
Yeah, I am a proud Papa!!!

Men's Basketball: Robert Thurman Tabbed GNAC "Rookie Of The Week"
Jan 13, 2009 NORTHFIELD, Vt. - After putting forth a very strong all-around performance in Norwich's victory over Mount Ida on Saturday, NU freshman men's basketball player Robert Thurman was selected as the Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) "Rookie of the Week" on Tuesday.
Thurman scored 13 points, grabbed nine rebounds and blocked a career-high eight shots as the Cadets defeated the Mustangs, 86-79.
For the season, Thurman is averaging 8.1 ppg., and 6.0 rpg. The Edwards, Calif., native also leads the Cadets with 19 blocked shots.
The Norwich men's basketball team returns to the friendly confines of Andrews Hall for the first time since early December on Tuesday, Jan. 13, when the Cadets host GNAC rival Lasell College at 7:30 p.m.

Starting 2010-2011 Season, Robert Thurman will be playing for the Cal Golden Bears, DIvision I basketball. He beat out a LOT of other transfer student to get this position, due his hard work and immense talent. Rob ended up both Rookie if the year and MVP for Norwich, and came in second place for COnfenerce Rookie of the Year due to the flu which kept him out of three games during last season. THis was a hard decision for him to make and only recently was convinced that he was good enough to make the jump to D-I and that he did not hurt hhis former Cadet's Teammates feelings. THis was a struggle for him, as he is fiercly loyal.
D3hooops.com still has him as the only top level player coming back for Norwich this year and I know his former teammates will step up.
Because of NCAA rules, he must sit out the upcoming season since he transferred from Division III to Division I. BUt with only 2 of his 10 smesters of eligdibility used, he will be able to player three years with Berkeley.

I got him up there and into a place with the starting forward, Jamal Boykin this saturday.
With a combination of Goodwill and thrift shop stops and a few donations from my brother, we got him enough stuff to make a start in Berkeley. He is EXCITED to say the least and we here in our little community are VERY happy he worked as hard as he did to make it academically, since you can't get into UC Berkeley on athletics alone.
Rob can't wait to get things going and the F-350 got us there and me back pretty well. In fact, I got 188.2 miles on the clock 'til it came off full, but then I drive like a grandfather, pacing with the semi's.... after 372 miles, I'd only gone through 1/3 of a tank.....
In my wildest dreams, I never thought he'd make it this far, but I was told his raw talent, under the right coaching would pay off for him and I hope he graduates with a degree AND enjoys his time playing. If he CAN make it to the pros somewhere, that would be OK, but his grades and his community service got him where he is now.
I love you , son. Do your best, that's all I could ever ask of you.
Dad
