What is the deal with stolen and abandoned property - when does it become mine?

I have a friend who had a piece of equipment dropped off in his parking lot. The serial tag was removed, the license plate was removed from the equipment trailer, he called the police to file a report and he was considering just having it towed out of his way. After how long would this equipment become his? I believe it was stolen. It is in great shape and the serial tags were removed.

Seems like a local court would be the best source of that info based on your township/city. Where I work after a certain amount of time and abandoned vehicle in the lot can be taken over but will need to submit for a title. With no numbers on that unit, it may be problematic.

I'd be real hesitant to ask, let alone to take one bit of advice, from a bunch of complete strangers on the errornet regarding a question like this. At least you can get a visual if you ask a total stranger on the street.

Yep, or county DA, even local law enforcement could say who to consult.

Consult a trailer manufacture if there is one in your area. I think there is a place on trailers where the Mfg. name and serial is scribed. Register it as homemade and sell it.
