New front brake calipers dragging

My issue is front calipers dragging after applying brakes. The new calipers have new pads and good rotors. This happens with both sides. I’ve changed all three rubber lines. Steel lines look good. No leaks anywhere. With the wheel off and cracking the bleeder it seems there’s still too much drag on the rotor. This happens with both sides. It seems to me that the wheel should spin Freely.

If you did not replace the rotors they have a rust ridge that forms on both inner and outer sides of the rotor. The new pads will hit this ridge and drag until the pads or the ridge wears down. It can also cause a shutter when braking.

Denny,
Thank you for the heads up on the rust ridge. I will check that out first thing in the morning.

I cleaned the rotors. They weren’t to bad. The truck has never been on a salty road. Still the same problem. With the wheels off and pushing the brake pedal a few times the hub and rotor are very hard to turn by hand. A slight pry on the caliper lets them spin free.

You have probably already lubed your caliper slide pins but I will just mention it again. Also inspecting them for any corrosion high spots.

Thanks Arcticdriver,
The calipers and brackets are new. I did lube them with white lithium. I also installed a new master cylinder. Bled the lines again. It seems they don’t want to fully release.

Slide pins should be lubed with silicone grease, not petroleum based. Petroleum based lube will swell the boots and cause the pins to hang up. It's also possible that your front brake hoses (if original) have collapsed inside and are acting like check valves. If you didn't change out the hoses, do that (and get that lithium grease out of the slide pins.)

On re-reading your original post, I see you already changed the lines. Did you mess with the master cylinder at all? If the brake pedal doesn't come all the way up, the piston inside might be covering the relief holes and not allowing fluid back into the reservoir.

You might try shooting a PM to FMTRVT, and ask him to look a this thread. Jack is the resident brake expert and could could probably shed some more light on your issue.

Brakes are freed up.
I just kept working the caliper pistons in and out until the dragging went away.

I did install new hoses with the new calipers. White lithium on all contact points. I didn’t put any grease on the pins at all.

I did install a new master cylinder but only after the new calipers and hoses.
