7.3L Oil Filters and FilterMAG magnets.

Well,
I just wanted to let people know you can use a Caterpillar Oil Filter on the 7.3L Engines.

The regular Motorcraft FL1995 has paper media and only filters to 17 to 19 Microns depending what spec sheet you read and holds 2 quarts.

The Wix 51792XE is 12" long and holds 3 quarts. It also has a Microglass media with a 5 Micron rating the best rating of any oil filter I have found. Wix also makes a smaller filter that holds 2 quarts with the same Microglass and 5 Micron rating. The thread size is 1 1/2-16 in.

The best FilterMAG magnets for the larger filters is the CT4.9PR model, it fits filters 4.4" to 5.5" round.
You buy 2 of them and they fit at the top of the oil filter in two " C " shapes that encircle the entire oil filter and trap up to 1 micron. You need to call the company to buy this size magnets for the larger filters, not sold online./ 1-800-filtermag These are special high temp rare earth magnets and are not toys or cheap ceramic magnets. The magnets are so strong you must use a special tool to remove them from the filter for the next oil change.

Using the larger oil filter and the two filterMag's on your oil filter will keep your oil looking clean for up to 10,000 mile oil changes easily. My last oil change was still brownish after 5000 miles.
I have been using the two FilterMAG magnets since the van was new. They work great and well worth the 125.00 plus dollars.

The magnets trap any small metal filings and they stick to the side of the oil filter metal housing, and this prevents contaminants from clogging the pleats in the oil filter.

Another good thing is it adds one more quart to the engine so you use all 4 gallons of oil and not be stuck with carrying around one quart in the jug. I have been using Rotella T6 full synthetic oil with great results.

When you first use the FilterMAG magnets on your oil filter, they will trap all the metal floating in your system. After your first oil change with the new magnets, buy a special oil filter can opener from Amazon, Jegs, Summit etc. and cut your oil filter open. You will then see how much metal filings and sludge that sticks to the magnets on the oil filter housing.

Even if you don't buy oil filter magnets, be sure to use a Microglass 5 micron oil filter in any size you choose. Some cheap paper oil filters are 30 to 40 micron. So be sure to check the ratings of each type.

Wix makes them for NAPA using the same number 51792XE . (may be called NAPA Gold 51792XE)

In closing, paper media is not the best and has very high micron ratings from 17 to 40 microns.

I wrote the Blue Donaldson was 10 micron but I was wrong, they are 15 micron.

To sum it up, Wix is a high quality USA made filter at 5 micron w/Microglass.

WIX has a Beta of 2/20 = 3/10

So 50% of 2-micron and 95% of 10-micron.

I can’t find a Beta for the FL-1995 but spec sheet says:
"Traps at least 98% of particles 18 microns or larger from your oil"

Not a direct “apples to apples” until we can find the Beta for the FL-1995 but the WIX is certainly a superior filter.

No doubt a great filter for severe duty applications.

I read soot is typically 1-3 microns, for reference purposes.

Thanks for the filter tips, did not know about the Caterpillar or magnets.
I have been using these on my 7.3 for the last 20 years, don't know the microns:

That's a good filter too! Holds 2 quarts.

The Wix 51792XE is the Microglass media at 5 Micron and holds 3 quarts, so you can use all 4 gallons in the oil change and double the micron rating.

The magnets work really well. The FilterMAG CT4.9PR ( Commercial Division for heavy equipment)
are for filters 4.4" to 5.5". They are so strong if you go to install the magnet and get your fingers between the magnet and the filter housing it will hurt your filters they are that strong. They are high temp magnets. Regular rare earth magnets lose strength at 180 degrees. So all those other brands on Amazon are not worth the time or investment.

Filter mag makes magnets for Industrial machines.

So, I emailed filter mag. They responded that the part I enquired about was for commercial only and probably out of my price range. They suggested model LTL2 from Pittsburgh Power. They have that one listed for $299. Did you get yours directly from filter mag for $125? They didn’t seem interested in selling anything today...

Here’s the actual email in case I took it out of context-
“The CT4.9PR is actually meant for industrial applications only. It was designed for those multi-million dollar haul trucks that cost the company millions per hour when they're out of commission. That being said, they're priced to fit that market.

You may want to try www.PittsburghPower.com. They have a product called the LTL2 that will fit your application perfectly...and will be much cheaper than the industrial version.”


P.S. - I'd like to see a multi-million dollar haul truck - especially if they make millions of dollars per hour. I might like to buy one of those.

Cool Info,

I bought my magnets back in 2000 when I bought the van. They were cheaper back then and I have a discontinued model but they fit the 5.66" round or smaller filter to 4". I think I paid 125.00 or so for the old discontinued magnets, so the new magnets are only 25.00 more each 20 years later, a good deal to me. Wait until you see how strong they are.

The plastic and design of them are rigid and you cannot make a magnet designed for 4.0" fit on a 4.66 round filter.


Yes, my magnets are very close to the new gray magnets. I'm going to get another set and use 4 magnets on my filter. Then cut it open at the next oil change.

In Alaska and Canada in the large gold mines. And in Africa for the diamond mines.

My engine has had the magnets on the oil filters since I bought it and my oil stays a brownish color, never gets black.
Something is working with these things.

Well - I have a neodymium magnet on my filter. Just one, but it takes both hands to slide it off. I have one on my differential cover as well. I got mine from here: https://www.kjmagnetics.com/

I thought of just buying the magnets (bare), when you look up rare earth magnets like the N55AH, the strongest magnets available today. The "AH" stands for high temps up to 240 degrees.

So if you buy some get the AH type after the magnet strength, ie: N42AH, N52AH are the high temp magnets.

The only problem is when you go to change the oil the oil filter is glowing hot and the individual magnets would be hard to remove in a Jiffy Lube bay compared to the two FilterMAG units.

The quality of the FilterMAG units are the Rolex of oil filter magnets. So well designed.

My old original Orange magnets are almost the same spec as the new gray models, the only change is the center where the advertising is is smaller than the old orange units that have a larger center box for the advertising. The new gray design makes the magnets stronger with more plastic as a backing. I will get a photo of my old mags and post it. The new gray housing design looks much better than the 20 year old units. The Magnets are the same N52AH or N55AH.

I wonder what the magnets would catch on a coolant filter?

Inquiring minds want to know...


I have 2 small magnets You can place on your hand and they are strong enough to go to the center of your palm and the back of your hand. They use the magnets for sports injuries.

Another video of the new magnets being installed on big equipment. Look how fast the magnet sucks to the oil filters. The gent is careful not to crush his fingers by the magnets.

These are the FilterMAG LTL2 gray magnets for 299.00 for two units. He says they are the 4.9 Industrial type, but they look like the LT type. The 4.9 magnets are a yellow color.

The tech should push the magnets as high up on the filter as he can, this way when anything enters the filter it gets trapped at the top and the bottom of the filter stays clean.

There are several cut & paste posts like this on the internet without a link to the source. The filter warehouses (where this was originally posted) are often guilty of posting incorrect data. The post above states the smallest particle filtered with an FL-1995 as 20-microns is worse than the Motorcraft website indicates..

I am not trying to be argumentative, I just want future readers to get correct data. The only accurate way to compare efficiencies of oil filters is using Beta Ratios.

My position is the filter you suggest is very likely the best for severe duty dusty environments where Caterpillar and other heavy equipment operate 24/7 but my truck is used 90% on pavement and the 7.3 has a reputation for 300K+ miles using an FL-1995 in these conditions.

The paper or cellulose media is fine for OCIs of 5K-7K miles. Synthetic medias benefit is they don’t break down when used for extended drain intervals.

The XE you are using is most definitely a superior filter but may not be necessary for every 7.3 application. I think it would be a great filter if a guy wanted to just change oil filters every other oil change.
