DEF Contamination?

My check engine light came on about four weeks ago, called the dealer and couldn't get to me in a timely manner. Told me as long as the light was not blinking, I should be OK. I drove the truck to Charleston, SC and back which is about 600 miles with no issues other than the Check Engine Light.

I took the truck in two weeks ago on Monday evening, nothing by Thursday, so I started calling and asking for an update.

On Friday, they told me I had contaminated DEF, showed me a sample in a dirty plastic cup. Gave me a quote of $4,400 to replace the DEF system.

I've read through most of the DEF related issues on this Forum and looks as if I should be getting a "50 miles until limp mode" message with my issue. I have never received this message as of yet and siphoned all of the DEF this weekend, over 2 gallons. Stuff looks just like the stuff that went in the last time it was filled which by the way has been a while.

I drove around this weekend, check engine light is still on and still no message to add DEF to the system. Any ideas, I really don't think I have a contamination problem?

Reset your trouble code(s) and see if it comes back.

I had the same code. Turns out the whole SCR/DPF was not functioning correctly. The dealer tried replacing sensors and the injector and the problem came back. They replaced the SCR/DPF and all appears to be good.$4k

I am confident that I do not have a contamination problem, however, now that the Dealer says the system is contaminated, how do I get FORD to fix my broken system. BTW, I have driven over 300 miles this week with probably no DEF in the system and no warnings or anything other than a check engine light.

A couple of things. I am hoping you meant 6.7L diesel! Second, what is the code the CEL is throwing? Third, if you are driving with no DEF, that is what is causing the CEL, most likely. When mine threw a code a few months back, it was low on DEF, but not as low as it has been in previous years. I took it to the dealer, who like you, could not look at it before I needed it for a trip. But I got some DEF (two jugs, at Wal-Mart, 5 gallons total), and ended up putting in one full jug (2.5 gallons), and about 3/4 of the other jug. Initially, the CEL did not go away, but after another stop, the CEL was gone when I started the truck again. And it has been fine since.

If you have no DEF, and it is indeed a 6.7L diesel, don't take chances. Get the DEF filled.

Early 6.7's you had to fill the DEF over the 1/2 way point or the system didn't know you had added. Since it's 5.5 gallons that meant 1 jug wouldn't always reset. 2 boxes would be a cheap test.

I thought I read on here somewhere that you needed to fill your DEF past 3/4 for the light to go off? If there was 2 gallons left in the tank the CEL light shouldn't have come on for the DEF level. I bet there is a sensor or sending unit issue. What code are you actually getting?

Yes, sorry, 6.7 L diesel. I will fill the DEF tank, however, if the DEF is really gone, then I should have been getting warnings that the truck was going into limp mode? I was hoping the warning would come on telling me the system was working properly, but without the warning, I'm really concerned the entire system is a failure as some have experienced and the dealer is going to go back to the contamination issue.

I'll refill today and post as to what happens.

If it's really empty and you add clean DEF how can it be contaminated?

Well, I am sure that Ford has it documented in their system and will show up anywhere I go. I refilled the DEF tank today, took 5 gallons. The Service Engine light is still on after a few trips today. Will continue to monitor the light.

Have you had the code read yet? If not, if you don't have a code reader, stop by Autozone and have the code read.

The Ford Service Tech never gave me the code nor is it on any of their paperwork, only shoved a dirty cup in front of me, "DEF is contaminated", it will be $4,400 to fix it. I will stop by and get the code. Thanks for all the feedback and ideas!
