If I had to bet, I'd say that Rotella "magically" became acceptable the minute they paid the royalty to Ford for the WSSM2C171-F1 standard. And, while I'm ranting - come on Ford. WSSM2C171-F1? Indeed! I tend to remember that -E was the CJ-4 standard and -F1 is the CK-4 standard.

Stupid to run your own testing to see if the oil formula protects your motor? Why is it stupid to demand greater protection for the motor??

It would have been easier to forgive Ford if they did not wait until the actual release of CK-4 to state their opposition to it.

All of the other engine manufacturers had time to test the new CK-4 products and approve them prior to release.

Disclaimer:
But I would still choose CJ-4 even if Ford had immediately given a thumbs up to CK-4.

I was very surprised to still see CJ-4 jugs of DELO 400 LE 5w40 full synthetic on the shelves at my local WalMart in both 1-gallon and 2.5-gallon.

What the heck?

You have to remember that Chevron stated they were going to continue making CJ-4 for quite some time past the advent of CK-4. My guess is there is still a fair amount in the sales channels that has not been depleted. I still see it in stock at my local WM as well and I grab a bottle or two every time I go to keep my stash full. I have yet to see the new Ford specification on any of the Rotella bottles nor on any PDS on Shell's website--despite reading in several places that T6 and others meet the new specification and have been accepted by Ford.

I remember

How many gallons in your "stash" again?

BTW, you occasionally run Mobil Delvac-1 5w40 as well? How do you think it performs compared to the DELO 400 LE 5w40?

I had alot of highway miles so I stretched my OCI to 6,500 miles on the DELO 400 LE 5w40. It is surprising how quickly the oil level on the dipstick drops after 6,000 miles.

I have about 40 gallons (10 OC's worth) on the shelves and all of it is CJ-4 5W-40--Delo and Delvac. I think that Mobil Delvac-1 5W40 is the "king" of the "off the shelf" HDEO's, but unless I am running it for a long OC, I tend to think it is wasted. I did a 7,000 mile OC on it and it had 6.22 TBN remaining so it could have kept going--though low TBN is rare on most diesels no matter which oil is used.

As you know, without dozens of UOA's of each oil, it is difficult, if not impossible, to develop a a trend, but I can confidently say that Delo has performed as well, if not better than Mobil Delvac, Shell Rotella, Kendall Super D-xa, and Motorcraft Powerstroke oil. I suppose that is why I keep stocking up on Delo 5W-40

I am with you on that.

The DELO 400 LE 5w40 runs great in my 7.3 PSD even though the Delvac-1 5w40 has the best base oil and additive pack on the market.

I picked up the DELVAC for $13/gallon compared to $21/gallon for DELO but the DELO just makes that 7.3 humm.
I am not talking additive packet since we know that all the Big Brands are going to have more than sufficient TBN at even 6K...its just "seat of the pants" in my two 7.3 gives DELO the checkered flag.

I am still running CJ-4 as well and keeping to 5K-6K mile OCI except this last time since changing on the road must be done on the sly.
