Fuel gauge and miles remaining error

I have searched with no results. I have a 2016 F250 Platinum. I changed the fuel tank out 2.5 years ago or so and had the computer reprogrammed from 26 gallons to the new 50 gallon Titan tank that I had installed. The fuel gauge and the "miles to empty" worked great for those 2.5 years. The last 2 tanks of fuel the "miles to empty" and the gauge have been acting like I have a much smaller tank installed. With the "miles to empty" telling me I had 50 miles left I filled up. It took 27 gallons. Has the computer reset back to thinking I have a 26 gallon and not the 50 gallon Titan tank?? Not sure what to do at this point. Thanks, Scott

Wondering if you might have a bad pickup/fuel gauge in the tank.

The miles to empty is a warning and shouldn't shut you down if you go to zero. Also, check to see if the wiring going to the tank might be pinched or chaffed or have rodent teeth marks in the insulation.

crawl under the truck and wiggle the wiring going to the sending unit and observe the gauge for changes.

If the gauge was showing you were below 1/4 tank when you got the 50 miles to empty warning then it sounds like the sender may have malfunctioned. I think the programming change only affects the DTE calculation and doesn't change how the gauge reads. Does the gauge indicate full when the tank is full and seem to drop steadily while driving? If you had your truck in for any repairs that may have required any module programming it's possible that they did so with the factory default programming (as built data).

The gauge acts normal in operation, it's just not accurate. If you didn't know the truck has a 50 gal. tank you would think everything in normal. It goes all the way to full and drops normally to empty. Only problem is it goes to empty after burning around 27 gallons. Thank goodness the fuel burned data is accurate.

I plan to get under the truck and wiggle the wires at the plug and have my wife watch the gauge for fluctuation. I don't think that is the case because the gauge is rock steady. But I'll try anyway!

Did you have the truck serviced? they may have updater the software. Call the dealer because they don't always tell you when they do this.

I have not had the truck serviced. I thought this would be no big deal and I would not be in too big a rush to fix it until yesterday! My miles to zero hit zero, no big deal I still have 20 gallons in the tank. Well I notice my soot % is 108!! The truck flashes "Exhaust filter plugging, drive to clean" Never seen that before. Well with "Miles to zero" at zero the truck will not go into "cleaning mode!!! Not good! I will run and fill up this morning and see if it will clean. I'm at 118% right now!!
