When I get a new vehicle or new to me vehicle, I always cut a spare key or two and program them with the 2 original keys. Once I am sure they will work, I put it away in my safe. A regular 80 bit key for the 2016 and older vehicles (128 bit keys for newer vehicles) that is not a fob key is cheap even at the local locksmith. This prevents the $50 programming of the PATS fee as a minimum.
