2002 F350 key-less remote wont work

I have a 2002 F350 7.3 diesel crew cab. I have owned this truck since new. Love the truck but I have a problem I can't figure out. The truck has the factory installed power door locks with factory key-less remote transmitter (key fob). I only have 1 original keyless remote transmitter and about a year ago it quit working. The lock , unlock and panic button on the fob do nothing. All doors lock and unlock fine from the door panel buttons and with the key . I replaced the key fob battery (lost the second OEM key-less remote transmitter) reprogrammed the key fob with the (TIC) procedure from my ford operators manual off-run eight times with the eight time ending on the on position. The programming works (doors lock then after hitting any button on the key fob) doors then lock unlock then when turning the key to off ends the programming mode and doors lock and unlock to confirm success. No problem with the TIC process. Tried the key fob and nothing no lock , unlock or panic button function. So I tried ordering a couple of aftermarket key fobs (remotes) and reprogrammed all three remotes OEM and two new aftermarket , still, nothing. I also read locking and unlocking the door before starting the reprogramming procedure helped other people with a similar problem or disconnecting both of the 12 volt truck batteries under the hood and reconnecting after an hour. I tried both of these ideas.... still no change. Is there a security module I can check fuses on? I read somewhere that a GEM (generic electronic module) might be the problem. Is this the security control for the truck? From what I read this devise handles the communication of the key fob to the trucks door lock and unlock functions. I hear this is a $500 devise and must be flashed by the dealer with my VIN before it can be used. Does anyone know if there is a fuse I can check for this GEM devise? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

'02 and later trucks don't have a GEM. They use a VSM (Vehicle Security Module) that handles perimeter alarm, remote keyless entry (and panic feature), computer-operated locks, and autolamp features.

You should check to insure the VSM has power (fuses 19 - 10amp, and 102 - 30 amp).
You may need to take it to a dealer to program the fobs. Typically, you need two already programmed fobs to self-program another one.

One of my 2002 does not have keyless locks and I priced a genuine Ford VSM for around $280 and another $100 to have Ford flash it.

I did not buy it yet but I think you can find a better deal than $500 if this is the actually the part you need to replace.

I did purchase an aftermarket key fob for my other 2002 and it has been working properly. I seem to recall using the technique you described.

Klhansen , Good information to know. I will check the fuses 19 and 102 on the VSM you mentioned as soon as I get back on my feet. Seems I contracted the creeping crud, cold-flue thing going around and its kicking my old rear end. Also thanks for the tip about possibly needing two already programmed remotes to program another. I will look into that further. Maybe my Ford service department can verify that for me. Thank you so very much for sharing your knowledge with me. I will update as soon as I get a chance to check things out.

ArcticDriver, Thanks for sharing what you discovered for pricing on VSM unit and flashing. It was mentioned to me I may need two working and programmed remotes to program another one with the TIC process in the manual. On your aftermarket keyfob you bought for your 2002 did you use the process to program just the one remote or did you already have two working remotes and programmed a third as a spare unit?

@twoton,

I have been trying to remember the specifics of programming. I know that I only had one working factory fob when I purchased the second one from a company that refurbs them and sells on ebay.

I think I used the sequence you described. It was pretty straight forward and my locks cycled when the instructions said they should.

Hay ArcticDriver, Just wanted to give an update. I checked fuse #19 and #102 with a volt meter. Both were good. Went to the dealer and they let me try my programing with one of their new keyfobs and still no success. Looks like I may have a bad VSM. Weird thing though everyone that has had VSM issues seems to have multiple or other symptoms, door ajar, radio turns on by its self, various light or dash issues . I have no other issues except transmitters wont work. Luck me I guess. Anyway, Thanks again for your assistance.
