Hello,
does anyone know a thermostat for the 6.0 that opens more/wider, or can I machine it, for more opening at operating temperature?
My coolant is since the EGR delete approx. 10°F colder in comparison with EGR cooler. (coolant pressure now 0-7 psi, with EGR cooler up to 18psi)
My camper is very heavy with 6.5 metric tons.
Today I measured the temperatures at the upper and lower radiator hose. At ECT 84°C (183°F) on the display there is only 66°C (151°F) on the upper hose and 44°C (111°F) on the lower hose. I think, the thermostat does not open completely. When I remove the thermostat, the engine warms up very slowly.
Is there a thermostat that opens further, so let more coolant to the radiator?
Before you start machining the thermostat I think you have some gauge or measurement errors. I don't understand how the top rad hose can be 18 degrees C cooler than the engine temperature. That's a huge delta - I don't believe it.

Part of the cooling problem is the coolant kind of dead ends at the back of the heads. I had to tap the back of the heads and put bypass lines up to thermostat, this increased flow dramatically and cooling.
Not sure if you have solved this problem, but I believe you can get a 170 degree thermostat that will open sooner, which should keep your overall temps lower. I just bought a 06 from the south, with which I believe to have one of these in because I can not get the temp above 173 pulling my outfit that goes about 19.000 lbs. I know this outfit gets warm enough to get in the 200's because my other truck that I know has a 185 thermostat in it will just fine on the same routes I have been driving for twenty years of digging ditches.
Interesting with the flow restriction, cannot speak to that but I do know that Mishimoto makes a good aftermarket thermostat, I run/ran them in an '04 Excursion and an '06 F-350. Both are the high temp thermos so they open at 200 F. The 6.0 likes the warmer temp and I have not had any issues getting too warm even towing very heavy in the summer.
200°F is too late to open the thermostat. The 6.0 does not want heat. I'm looking for a thermostat that fully opens at 190°F. I often drive my 6.0 camper up steep mountains with ~14300 pounds vehicle weight. The engine quickly reaches a high temperature.
Curious what you mean by high temp, hauling a camp trailer (toy hauler) with the 200 degree thermo up some serious grades at 4-6000 feet when it was 90-105 F outside I ran 214-222 degrees engine temp. Combined truck and trailer weight about 28,000 pounds.
in my opinion these temps are too high. the 6.0 does not want heat. in my experience, most problems (head cracks, blown head gaskets) are caused by heat. We're talking about water temps, the oil temp's a little higher. Of course the engine needs a min. temp. to work, below 185°F is also not optimal, moisture etc. from the oil should finally disappear. More than 210°F ECT I do not drive.
Fair enough, had several guys in a similar thread a few years ago saying that the 200 degree thermo gained them about 1 MPG. I didn't really watch it close enough to really be able to know a 1mpg difference (too much variation in how and where I drive) for mine the fan clutch does not even engage until about 218 to 222.
