Broke down while driving! Just shut off... down know why...

Well heres another one to add to the list for you guys...

Last night at 11:30pm on the way home from the movies (good thing I wasnt drinkin, ) my truck just broke down. And I mean broke down literally while driveing it down the rd down a hill. I came to a halt right in front of a Shell Station. Still had 43 Miles left in the tank.

Now I guess that tells me 2 things because in my mind a diesel can't be stopped with out 1.) Air or 2.) Fuel. If it has those it should keep truckin, correct or no?

My guess is that an oil pump went out (something that controls the injectors). I had no issues with the turbo recently and it sounded great before hand. I have an sct set on street and an AFE Stage 2 intake... Thats it.

This is the second time that the truck has just died like this on me and is leaving me VERY uneasy as I do ALOT of traveling long distance where there may be 50 miles in between gas stations. (well maybe 30)

Ended up towing the POS home 30 miles with my GF's inline six JEEP! it overheated it almost non-the-less but it got the job done and ran like a champ. Lst time a 4 runner had to tow me...

What could be the problem?

Thanks in advance,
Alex

Same thing happened to my bride in my '06 6.0. She was on the road, then nothing. Truck would crank but not start. Turned out to be the High Pressure Oil Pump (HPOP). The HPOP pressure on my truck was tested at 230psi - too low to run the FI. Factory warrenty covered it w/ a 100 deduction. There is a Tech servise bulletin (TSB) out to address the HPOP seal failure. I posted a thread last month about my issue.

Best of luck.

This could be caused by any number of things.

Do you have the ability to retrieve trouble codes?

If you do, please post codes here and we can help you a little further.

Same thing happened to me earlier this year. I was pulling my snowmobile trailer over to my parents, went to slow down to turn in the drive was and it was dead. Had to have my dad tow me and the trailer in to yard. It would just crank and crank. The dealer said it was a bad #3 injector. They also replaced a valve at to back of the engine, I think it was the STC valve or something. It's been awhile and I'm not that familiar with the engine. It's been fine since then. I wasn't sure that an injector would make the engine not run, would think it would just run like crap and blow smoke but who knows. Mine's an '05 also.

Sounds like the fitting (stc) on hpop known to be bad on 05's. Ford has updated version and bracket.

I had this happen with my 06 about a month ago. Turned out the engine wiring harness was wired/routed incorrectly and was rubbing against metal. It eventually wore though and would short out, shutting the truck off. I was able to restart it though pretty quickly. It happened to me twice, once on the freeway and once coming down a hill. Way to go Ford quality control!

Well I can say I deff. did NOT run out of fuel. There was no sputtering, bucking, or any of that running for 2 secs and then a half sec off stuff. I have ran out of fuel before and this was nothing like that. It was just literally driving fine and then alll the sudden it turned off.

The truck would have a least kicked over a lil bit if it had been a fuel issue. I put 2 gals in from the gas station I was at even though it was at 43 Miles left on the Odometer.Thought that the gauge could have been wrong but um um.

I even rolled it down the hill to a flat area and tried a few more times. But no start. Not even kicking over. It was trying to start (starter was turning the motor) but nothing was catching.

It's at the dealership now completely back to stock so well see what they have to say tomorrow afternoon after they get a chance to take a look at it.

It was making a weird noise for the past 3,000 or so miles... only when the rpm range was 1800-2200 rpm though. I had posted a few weeks back about it but was pretty much told to not worry about it and that I was just hearing things. Everyone I knew that listened to it said it sounded pretty much normal... cept the gf. she heard it to.

Don't know if that has anything to do with it. But it may very well. The sound sounded like a normal diesel engine but with a slightly higher pitched top hit. (thats the best I can do to describe it...)

Thanks for any help you can offer,
Alex

ps.. i can check codes with the SCT... and non were thrown... So I dont know. The last time it was the LPOP I kinda am leaning toward the HPOP because I have not had that serviced yet. Matter of fact I will have them fix that fitting to. As well as all the maintance it needs at 52,500 miles... And I saw collant all over the air filter... So im kinda hopin i some how blew the HG to. So I can get them ARP's in and jack the HP up.

But I dont think that will be the case..

Mine just did the same thing...On the way home from the racetrack 1:00am after 120 miles of towing 10,500lbs, quit on the offramp!
My question is... The injectors cycle when the key is turned on, but won't start

No........
1993 - 1994 was the last of the fuel - Air and enough juice to keep the fuel shutoff solenoid open.
Now there are a bunch of things to shut you down.

Sounds like what a lot of people experience when the STC fitting goes bad. It's only on the '05 models too, as Ford changed it after that and used a different setup prior to that.

How many miles have you got? I was probably lucky to be pushing 150k and it not go bad. The trucks been road hard and put up wet.

Mine died pulling into my driveway last winter. Dead, like someone put a round through its brain. My dealer had it towed in and it turned out the FICM (fuel injection control module I believe) had shorted out. I have never had a vehicle just drop dead like that sort of gives one pause about being hundreds of miles from home with these trucks. Now I have an intermittent surge problem that does not leave codes and they cannot figure out at least it keeps running.

SoDakMac... I hear you there man. It's kinda scary to know that you really can't depend on even your own truck. I plan to head to vermont from here in Md this winter... We'll take the truck up but honestly I feel I can depend on the 6 banger jeep grand cheeokee with 110,000 miles more then my truck to pull me through the trip.

I have 52,500 miles on it. 05'
