Lost tranny after body shop 4R100

I lost all forward gears on my first off highway trip after my pickup was in the body shop. It’s a 2000 f350 4x4 automatic with the 4R100 obviously. In the body shop they replaced the tranny cooler. And after that I had only driven longer trips on the highway and then I took it hunting and was just putting around when all the sudden I put it into drive and nothing happened. I got it to limp forward at 2800 RPM and I still have reverse. It is headed to the shop for a rebuild and upgrade to a stage 2 and need an opinion on whether I should go after the body shop or not for at least some compensation. Never had an issue with my transmission until now and I’m not sure exactly if the cooler they took off was the stock one or an aftermarket.
Thanks guys.

I'm not sure what they could have done that would result in the failure of the transmission. Even if it was 100% restricted, the bypass should have taken care of it. I suppose they could have messed up a connection resulting in it dumping the fluid, but then you wouldn't have reverse. Sounds like something mechanical failed in the transmission. If your clutches weren't burnt up before, they are now that you did the 2800 rpm crawl.

Yeah, I just wanted to get an opinion on that. It is in the shop right now getting a stage 2 rebuild for a little over $3k. Thought about doing it myself and get the ATSG book for the 4R100, but when you do that there is no warranty. Is there anything else I need to do once that tranny is rebuilt. I don’t think the shop is doing anything to the transmission cooler, will stock be okay?

No - anytime a transmission goes out, you need to replace the cooler and flush the lines. Might as well put the 6.0 cooler on since you'll be buying a new one anyway.
