If the overdrive is flashing, you have transmission codes. You need a scanner capable of reading them. When I had this happen, it turned out the wiring harness coming from the VSS was self destructing. I bought a new pigtail for the VSS, but when I went to splice it in, the wiring was chalky black powder. I cut up a few inches - still oxidized wire. I ended up cutting a couple of feet forward of the VSS before I found good copper. Spliced in a new wire and problem solved. Yours could be the same, or it could be something completely different. The code will help narrow it down.
