DIY tymar??

I am sure this has been asked before. What are the pro's & con's
of doing this? does the engine end up sucking in hot under hood air?

No cons at all Just get the real deal its not worth your time and fuel trying to round up the parts.IMO

I agree. I wished I had just bought the "real" Tymar kit or the Ford severe duty intake by the time I had rounded up or fabricated the parts necessary to insure good airflow (a 4" steel pipe, versus black PVC), and insure that the filter was secure (so it didn't vibrate around and cut through my wiring harnesses with that "cheese-grater" mesh) and oriented so that the intake tubing didn't rub against the IC tubing.

Search for "Cold Air Intake...Is it true?" for a thread from Dec. 2006. Good info about under-hood temperatures for the Tymar-style intake. Look for the post from "Bella_PSD" -- he's done some measurements. Bottom-line to me appeared to be that it's not a big deal.

Mine cost me about $30 including the NAPA 6637. I will prolly go w/an AIS system when I decide what else I might wanna stuff in that space...

See pics in my sig. Parts list - 6637, 3" PVC coupling (4" OD), and a couple of clamps.

Benefits are more air available/longer filter life and cons are more turbo/intake noise (not for everyone)

As for temps - yeah, under hood is prolly a few degrees warmer than ambient while cruising. I doubt you could dyno the difference on a mostly stock truck - definitely no change in mpg or on the butt dyno...

Choose wisely. Or PLEASE post pics of the carnage!!!

I think the DIY intake is as good as it gets for newbs. I bought my PSD about a month back and this is a good way to get your hands on your new motor and do some (minor) work in the engine bay.

More air to the motor is never a bad thing, and as long as you moving more than 5-10 MPH the air under your hood is the same temp as ambient air.

Just personal observations on my part, but the con's are there is an increase in engine drone at certain speeds on certain roads (mostly highway). This can be resolved by building a cold air type box around the filter.

The pro's are more power at lower RPM's (handy with a stick shift). Then engine doesn't bog down as much after a shift and you can avoid down shifting in some situations. I'm sure the lower RPM gains translate to the auto's too.

Tymar - I just did it.....

All, I just did the DIY Tymar intake on my 2001 7.3 SD.

Here is what I want to ask and want to know.

As most of you I have spent hours looking into this and now that I have done it I am starting to think a little bit about switching back to my AIS System. Here is what I think so far:

1. Turbo - spools quick - sound is the following: Sppppssssssssssssss let off the pedel and you hear it unload sssssssssssppppppS. Sounds good but my question is: how will this sound on a long trip on the highway driving about 70mph for 4 hours? Will it do any harm? (Has anyone had issues with this)

2. I did this mod Tymar as a proof of concept, but I am torn on the idea. Should I go back to the AIS Intake? Should I run this Tymar for a bit and see? (I just put this on 3 hours ago).

3. Is there any issues, burning up the Turbo? I noticed that my AIT F, Air Intake Temp is a little higher now usually with my AIS it was reading more the outside temp of what it was sucking into the AIS System, now that I have relocated my AIT I noticed that is is ready temps higher than what I was previously getting, like this evening its in the 50 or 60's and the temp reading I was getting was about 85- 95 degrees. Downside to this? or not to worry about this since the sensor is not in the box as it was when using the IAS.

Any help would be very much and kindly appriciated.

I don't think that the tymar will harm your engine or turbo. Whether you should go back to the AIS depends upon whether or not you like hearing the sound of the turbo. If you get tired of the extra sounds, then go back to the AIS.

I don't think you will ever notice the sound on flat land, your only pushing a little over 5# boost. It does get a little anoying on long pulls uphill with a load, especially with a ww.

At a steady highway speed, I can't hear anything much more with the tymar than with the stock intake. The real added sound from the tymar comes during acceleration, and when you let off the throttle (mostly for manuals). At a steady speed, I don't really hear anything. And, during a steady hard uphill pull, it's still not some loud obnoxious noise. If it's a little much, turn the radio up a little more .

Personally, I love turbo noise. Just bought a 38r, and a large part of the reason was for the noise lol.
