New GT38 Center Cartridge

What exactly is involved when putting a new GT 38 Garrett center cartridge in one's turbo?

Is the unit balanced from the factory and does it require additional balancing once it is installed?

Do remanufactured turbos have an advantage over installing a new center cartridge?

Yes, they are balanced. The advantage for buying the cartridge is time savings- just remove and replace the whole guts. The disadvantage is $$.

Is your current turbo in need of a rebuild?

Does the new cartridge come with a new comp wheel? If it doesn't then you would still need it balanced again if your worried about it.

I rebuilt mine with one of barders 360 kits 20k and it's fine.

Will not really know until my mechanic removes it to install new up-pipes and non-EBPV pedestal. The replacement unit is a complete, new Garrett center cartridge. Only my old housings are used, I am told.

My turbo is not giving me problems at all. Just figure it must be tired at 225K miles. Not sure I can count on it for another 75K plus miles. Figure it is a good time to replace it while other work is being done.

I rebuilt mine at 245k for PM as well. I might add it was perfect.

They are a tough unit as long as you don't run really high egts and backpressures.

the turbo is easy access If not broken, I wouldn't touch it. unless you want to upgrade it.

how much did you get the non-EBPV pedestal for? i need to replace mine the stock one has started to leak where the actuator rod goes in at. I already gutted the EBPV in the turbo itself.

Boy, you come into that home stretch so strong and then.......
then you bring up a "posssible mute point"...

Steven was getting to the fact that a complete center rotating cartridge willl come completely balanced, however it is going to come with a "plain Jane compresssor wheel and most end users preferr a more agressive compresssor wheel. In changing this compresssor wheel out to a diffferent one, this will throw out the whole "toatall balance" as a new "center rotating center cartridhe assembly". I believe Blue was trying into indicate this...

Ya that's the point I was trying to make nick. If you go through all the effort, then swap a wheel it should be balanced again.

I bought my non ebpv pedestal from riffraff for 100 bucks.

I just picked up a van turbo nick! I will rebuild it with a 360 kit and stick my billet wheel in it. It will be nice to be at 35 psi of boost and 40 psi backpressure.

My stock turbo or like 40 psi boost 70 backpressure haha

These 160/30's are a huge bump in power lol
