Question Asking too much? Or is something wrong?

This past monday I made a 500 mile round trip to pick up my new tractor. On the way out I pilled my dad's 26' equipment trailer that weighs in the neighbor hood of 2k. Truck ran great and pulled as I expected.
On the way bar I had the new tractor and bush hog putting the load around 8.5k total if my math is correct.
It was all I could do to coax 75MPH out of her. Boost was safe and steady, trans never went over 177 but my EGTs want to stay right at 1200 degrees. When I had it up to speed ant the TC locked in I was pushing 1800RPMs so the engine didnt sound as though it was lugging but the EGTs still camped out over 1100 degrees. I constantly watched the temp gauge and would feather the throttle if stayed at 1200 for too long which would bring it back down to 1050 and it would start creeping back up. I also Noticed that when that at times when the engine was pulling nice and steady that I would get a little grey smoke at certain throttle positions. Going up and down hills and through small towns I had lots of stops and starts. After each stop it would take about 3/4 of a mile to get back up to speed.

Is 75mph with a load asking to much of my 20 year old beast? Or is something amiss? Is there anything else I can do to get my EGTs down (that wont break the bank).
Otherwise the truck ran great and handled the load great.

Sounds like you have 3:55 gears.

Dropping the trans out of OD might of help a lot in both the EGT's and the tow itself.

I do believe it is 3.55 gears. I tried dropping out of OD but no real improvement in in EGTs just another 1000RPMS is all it really got me.
As long as the truck is okay I can live with that,This is about the biggest thing I plan on ever pulling and it should be short trips from here on out. I am also having a custom trailer built that will be a little lighter and lower. Truck otherwise does the stuff I need it too just fine.

I was gonna post a pick but it wont let me upload it. I drop it in the box and it shows up for a few seconds before disappearing.

Another observation: My engine temp gauge usually never gets past "N" in Normal, While pulling It got all the way over to the "A", I was impressed. Never seen it that high, maybe she got warmed up enough to loosen up the cob webs.

If those EGTs are from towing on flat terrain then I'd say they are a little on the high side for 8500 lbs. Some of that could be the low RPMs, but hard to say as I have 4.10, so hopefully someone with the same set up will give some feedback. For me, at 70 mph towing roughly a 10,000 pound 5th wheel I will see EGTs between 700 and 850 with the RPMs around 2300 rpm on flat terrain.

In the mean time I would be checking for up pipe leaks or boost leaks

I wouldn't call it flat terrain. I was up and down hills on good ol' Georgia back roads. The only really level riding I did was over bridges. I was only on a highway for about 30 minutes, If you have ever traveled across Georgia you know their is no real good route East or West.

I can get pics to upload to my garage (put tractor there) and profile but Its not allowing me to attach to this thread.

All I did was right-click the fullsize image in your garage, and "Copy image address" (in Chrome). Then come here, click the image icon above the Message field, and paste the URL in. It works for almost any image - here's one from this page:

It sounds like you are in desperate need of 373 gears. Your truck while towing would have much less EGT temperature in a little bit higher RPM. If you had 373's you would probably be 2100 rpm's while the same speed with about 400 less on your EGT

We mainly travel in the truck thus the 3.55s are better suited for what we do. I only pull heavy every couple months, the rest of the time it is a boat or something. I will consider a Intercooler for my next upgrade.

I've got a '96 automatic with 3.55 gears and use it to tow a 27-foot travel trailer. But, I'm usually running closer to 60 mph on the highway for two reasons: I don't want to go fast when I'm hauling freight on a hitch, and my ST-rated trailer tires are approved for 65 mph maximum.

When I get in the hills, I turn off OD as soon as the tranny begins "hunting," as the up-and-down shifting is not good for the tranny. I've found that getting into third gear brings down the EGTs pretty well. However, I suspect the EGTs would still stay up there if I were pushing 75 mph. I've only got 215 hp, and I'd think about all of them are being utilized at 75 towing a load at maximum GVWR.

I'm sure an intercooler would be helpful, but I've lived with the original OBS equipment for 21 years now, and I'm too old to start complaining. Besides, my ole gal hasn't let me down even one time in all those years towing a travel trailer up-and-down hills, mountains and through the plains.
