Couple quick questions about the NAPA GPR109 -glow plug relay

OK, I finally broke down (not literally) and bought a new relay switch for my 1997 f250. All winter I have been chancing it with a gpr that was sticking and not turning on for a couple minutes after I turned the key. Friday it almost didn't turn on at all so I decided to get a new one. I went to Napa, where I thought I had originally purchased my first replacement. I noticed that the posts were opposite of the one I had on my truck. I have only replaced this thing once in the 11 years I have owned this truck. Do the wires have to go on these things in a certain order? I ask this because with the current set up I went with there is now a buzzing sound coming from the gpr unit. It does work, and shuts itself off after a couple minutes but the buzzing sound is quite loud when the hood is up and you are outside of the truck. I barely noticed it while sitting in the cab, but I did hear something that I don't remember the old one doing. I thought maybe I had the wires on backwards, but then again it is working. -maybe it's a faulty unit that will not last too long? Or does it not matter? Thanks


Also, the three prong plug for my heating unit has broke off right at the plug. Can I just splice a normal three prong plug from a hardware store on this thing? It sees to be pretty much a normal looking plug, the wire itself seems a little different though. It would be nice to be able to plug this thing overnight again, I miss the quicker warm-up times. Especially when it was -6 out...the truck did start though

Make sure that it is a GPR 109 (the case must not be grounded or the relay will not shut off). The wires go big terminals to big wires and small terminals to small wires (it's really that simple). You can replace the 3-prong plug with a heavy duty replacement from the hardware store (I did it when I did the plug relocation on mine (see pic in sig). Cheers!

OK thanks, as far as I know it is a GPR 109. Don't really see anything that states it on the part itself, but the box says it is...although, and I am not 100% positive, I thought I purchased my first replacement from Napa 5-6 years ago when I replaced the original. Maybe I picked it up from somewhere else and forgot, who knows?? I remember hearing about the NAPA replacement back then... -but if I did, they must have changed the post location again since the new one is opposite my first replacement.


Any way, the unit does shut off after a couple minutes, and it does turn the glow plugs on during the couple minutes it is on. I am just concerned about the buzzing sound.

Wow 11 years and only replaced once. I usually do mine about every 2-3 years and that is stretching it. I've only had good luck with the Ford Motorcraft brand GPR.

1996 F250 4x4 ext. cab, long bed 5 spd. 3.55ls, Tymar Intake, Tymar 4" downpipe and 4" exhaust. AIC, B&W turnoverball, EBPV brake, tranny temp gauge, boost gauge, and egt gauge. 2.5" axle drop bracket, F350 springs up front, and F350 rear axle blocks. 260k miles. RETIRED.

NEW (to me) 2005 F350 FX4 Crewcab shortbed, SRW, Lariat, auto, V10. 5600 lbs front end.

doesn't sound to me like you had good luck at all with them...

If it warms up a little more this week, maybe Ill return it and see if I just have a bad one. Otherwise it might just have to stay on as long as it is doing its job. It is working, just loudly...although it is barely noticeable with the hood shut sitting in the cab.

My factory relay lasted 7 years then I ran a GPR109 for 2 months waiting to put in a Stancor. No problems for the last 6 years.

i bought a gpr at my local napa store a month ago and the problem i had was the one they listed in there computer wasent the right one. it was black and the one that was on the truck was brown they said they had run into this problem before and they remembered this particular relay they had to match by the color not by the part number. and the big posts were opposite of the old one like you described but it worked. i suggest taking it back and exchanging it or if nothin else get one from ford.

I use the napa gpr111 on my trucks and some other trucks I've worked on. Seems to hold up well, I've had the same one on my 97 over 4 years now

i had exactly the same experience (buzzing) with my new 109. seems to work just fine though. turns on, then off in a couple minutes. solved my starting problems as well.

i've also been told it doesn't matter which post you go to.

the stancor sounds like a much more robust model though, and when i change it again it will be to that.

I just purchased a back-up relay to put in my glovebox from NAPA and they gave me a GPR110. Also checking their online store, it specs the GPR110 as well.

Is this thing going to work when I need it?

I believe that the GPR110 is a direct replacement for the factory relay where the GPR109 is a cheaper version with the top post 90 degrees out from the factory one.
