Finally got around to checking the Delo bottle... it looks to be Delo 400 SDE... does that answer your question? it also says API CK-4/SN

2001 F350 XLT 4X4 crew cab, dual rear wheels, long bed, black, 7.3l turbo diesel, automatic transmission, 4.10, shift on the fly, running boards, sliding rear window, 38 gal fuel tank, Odyssey extreme 65-PC1750T batteries, Michelin LTX-MS2 rear tires, Sumitomo Encounter front tires, Shell Rotella Ultra elc, 11,500 gvwr, 20,000 gcwr, 7500 gvw, completely stock, 114,000 miles when purchased, now has 250,000 miles, repairs so far: two starters, batteries, cps, brakes, tires, alternator, ball joints, locking hub, wheel hub, AC compressor, serpentine belt, power steering pump, driver's side window, ignition switch, o-ring, Spectra premium radiator, water pump, fan clutch, fan blades, thermostat, thermostat housing, tensioner. It is a conventional motor oil.

Personally, I would not use this oil in a Powerstroke. It is not on the Ford “Approved” List and it is dual rated for gasoline engines (SN). The concensus following the new API rating of CK-4 was to only use Diesel rated oils (CK-4) and not dual-rated (CK-4/SN). That may have changed but I would still use Diesel rated only (HDEO).

Opinions welcome. I have not been keeping up on this topic for awhile.

Thanks guys! I'm going to start ordering all of the parts I need to replace the glow plugs...

Seems like most people think its a good idea to replace all 8 glow plugs while your in there? and also replace the valve cover gaskets? Possibly the wiring as well?

And is there anything else I should check while i've got these areas opened up??? Ive only had the truck for about a year now and it has about 215k miles... so I don't know w ton about the motor.. hence the recent oil analysis...

Arctic driver, thanks for the not on the oil, I obviously just did the oil change, but I will definitely look into running another oil that is specifically for diesel motors rather than being dual certified for gas engines as well... I really had no idea that was even a thing. I figured they would all be diesel specific.

Notice that the only Delo motor oil approved by Ford is the Delo 400 SDE in 10W-30, which is odd because according to Chevron's web site, it only comes in 15W-40 https://www.chevronlubricants.com/co...ae-15w-40.html.

No Walmart Super Tech motor oil is approved.

Shell Rotella in T3, T4, T5, and T6 in both 5W-40 and 15W-40 are all approved.

Tractor Supply Traveller 15W-40 is approved.

I would take care of everything under the valve covers, then you don't have to do it again for a very long time.

I would also stick with Motorcraft parts for everything as far as the plugs, under valve cover wiring and gaskets.

On the oil, when I first purchased my truck the recommendation was for a oil that had at least two of the certifications on the label. Instead of looking all over the place I just started with Valvoline All Fleet 15w40 and then move to Valvoline Premium Blue 15w40. Other than the factory oil and the first oil change that is the only oil that has been in my truck with zero problems. It is also the recommended oil for Cummins diesel engines.

If you want to stick with Delco get their Heavy Duty Diesel Oil 15w40

It is funny that the list does not mention Valvoline Premium Blue 15w-40 but does mention the Valvoline Heavy Duty 8600 which is what the Premium Blue is.

This forum is the best haha... such a wealth of knowledge. I will certainly switch my motor oil on my next change. I'll probably run this stuff for 3k miles just so I don't waste the $70 in oil and filter.

It sounds like I should replace the 4 under valve harness/plugs that run from the valve cover plug to the actual GP's themselves... Is it also necessary to replace the wiring/plugs that hook into the exterior plugs on the valve covers? And are there any o-rings or anything that I need to by separate of the ZD-11 glow plugs? or do they come with everything needed? It's kinda hard to tell on the diesel o rings website.

So far I have the the following in my cart ready to go:
- 8 ZD-11 glow plugs
- 2 valve cover gaskets
- 4 under valve cover harness/plugs
- also considering throwing in the Stancor GPR for good measure - every component on the truck is still original from what I can tell, so I'm sure it could use replacing.

The plugs just screw into the head, no O rings. On the external wire harness unplug them and take a look at the pin end and see if they look burnt. If not they should be alright. And if there is a problem you can change them out later.

Ford testing has shown some CK-4 type formulations have shown inadequate wear protection compared to CJ-4 formulations developed and licensed before 2016. Therefore, Ford recommends using motor oil that meets the WSS-M2C171-F1 specifications.

I am working on replacing my glow plugs right now, and the very last one that I tried to remove seems to be stuck. I was slowly unthreading it from the head, when I realized that the casing was backing itself out just like it should, but the filament was not moving. I stopped before I removed the threaded sleeve completely and I re threaded it back down. But now I noticed that the filament sticking out of the top is wobbly, like it is broken off somewhere. I have no clue what to do and I am pretty sick to my stomach... Can I just leave that one like it is? OR is that a terrible idea?

I would start a new thread at some point since this is getting stretched out over a year.

If I was in your spot then I would do whatever is necessary to remove and replace that broken GP.
