Intermittent start problem. Strange one

I have a 1997 F-250 with the 7.3 PS. I have an odd intermittent start problem that 2 shops can't figure out the cause. Sometimes the truck won't start and sometimes it will chug for a second or 2 and stop. After 2-3 attempts it will start and run fine. Sometimes it will start up fine. The problem occurs if hot or cold. I recently drove it 6 hours and it ran perfectly. The fuel filter, oil, oil filter, air filter, CPS, and fuel pump have been replaced.

Would really appreciate some ideas on where to look for a problem like that.

Later, Bill

Thanks for the responses and I've been out of town for a few days.

I didn't see any problems with any exhaust smoke, however this morning it took a long crank time to get it to start ( didn't happen before) and when it did, some white smoke came out and then some dark. The truck was plugged in and warm.

No, it hasn't been replaced.

No, the diesel shop didn't check the harness because they started the truck numerous times and it always fired right up. A regular shop saw the problem, but couldn't figure out the problem, but did mention the UVC.

The noise is similar but not identical. When it starts, the truck runs fine.

Glow Plugs

Test your glow plugs. Sounds like you have a few that are bad or like was said earlier a bad harness.

The truck will exhibit the same start problems when warm, so I'm told it isn't the glow plugs. Since the truck will run perfectly after it starts I'm not sure about the UVC. With the truck running you can wiggle the UVC connectors and it still runs fine. I've taken it over some really rough roads the last few days without any run problems. I'm trying to record the sound of the start up problem, but it has started fine the last 2 days...go figure.
